Developmental Support Worker / Personal Support Worker / Certified Nursing Assistant / Health Care Aide - Cherryhill Pl, London - CAD$108.00/week
Description
About the Client:
We're seeking a compassionate caregiver for a gentleman with frontal lobe dementia living in London, Ontario. He is aware of his diagnosis and has recently become open to receiving care. His condition affects his cognitive abilities, including worsening memory and occasional delusions.
While he is pleasant and polite, he can become confused and may misinterpret physical touch as aggression. He does not like feeling trapped or controlled. He enjoys walking at the mall and staying connected with his community, though his memory of familiar places has begun to fade.
He attends a community program on Thursdays and Fridays.
Responsibilities:
- Provide companionship and social engagement to combat loneliness
- Offer cognitive support through gentle memory prompts and redirection
- Assist with light meal preparation, including reheating food and preparing simple meals
- Help with light housekeeping and tidying
- Engage him in meaningful activities where he feels useful, such as assisting with folding laundry or easy meal preparation tasks
- Provide occasional transportation for errands or appointments
- Monitor a medication dispensing machine (he currently manages independently but may need support if confused by alarms)
- Accompany him on walks in the community while being aware of safety concerns
- Communicate regularly with family members about his well-being
What We're Looking For:
- Experience working with individuals with dementia, particularly frontal lobe dementia
- Bilingual in English and Spanish (Spanish is his native language)
- Patient, calm, and gentle approach
- Understanding of trauma-informed care and how to avoid triggering feelings of being trapped
- Ability to engage clients in activities that promote dignity and purpose
- Strong communication skills with family members
- Reliable and takes initiative when needed
- Comfortable with light housekeeping and meal preparation
- Valid driver's license for occasional transportation needs
Schedule:
We are starting slowly with 2 visits per week, 2 hours per visit, preferably Monday and Wednesday (he attends a community program Thursday and Friday). Times should avoid his napping periods and will be coordinated with local family members. This schedule may expand as he becomes more comfortable with care.
The family is committed to supporting both the client and the caregiver to ensure a positive care experience.
