InFocus Film School is a Vancouver-based cinematic arts institution providing accelerated, hands-on education in film, animation, visual effects, game design, screenwriting, and digital design.

Position Overview The Production Design Instructor delivers practical, industry-focused instruction in the creative, technical, and practical foundations of production design for film. The instructor helps students understand how visual concepts are developed from screenplay through production and how the Production Designer and Art Department contribute to the overall visual language of a film.

Through lectures, demonstrations, workshops, project-based learning, and constructive feedback, the instructor will guide students in developing production design concepts, visual research, presentation materials, and practical approaches to student film projects.

The ideal candidate is an experienced Production Designer, Art Director, or senior Art Department professional with a minimum of three years of relevant industry experience and at least one year of instructional experience, or a recognized adult education/training credential.

Key Responsibilities

- Deliver lectures, demonstrations, workshops, and practical instruction in production design and Art Department workflows.
- Teach the role of the Production Designer and Art Department within a professional film crew.
- Guide students through script breakdown and analysis from a production design perspective.
- Teach visual language, tone, colour palette, texture, and overall film aesthetics.
- Instruct students in visual research, reference gathering, mood boards, concept development, and presentation materials.
- Teach principles of set design, set dressing, props, graphics, locations, and other practical production design considerations.
- Guide students in assessing and adapting existing locations for production.
- Introduce production design budgeting and approaches to working within limited resources.
- Teach Art Department organization, scheduling, preparation, communication, and workflow.
- Demonstrate effective collaboration with Directors, Cinematographers, Producers,



Costume Designers, and other departments.
- Mentor students through pre-production planning, production problem-solving, and practical Art Department workflows.
- Assess assignments, production design concepts, pitch materials, and student film projects and provide constructive feedback.
- Model professional Art Department protocols, expectations, collaboration, and industry best practices.

Qualifications & Requirements

- Minimum one year of instructional experience in a post-secondary, vocational, industry-training, or adult-learning environment, or completion of a recognized adult education/training credential.
- Minimum three years of relevant professional experience in Production Design, Art Direction, or a senior Art Department role in film or television.
- Skilled credits, portfolio, or other work samples demonstrating relevant experience.
- Strong understanding of professional film production and Art Department workflows.
- Experience developing visual concepts from screenplay through production.
- Strong knowledge of script breakdown, visual research, mood boards, set design, dressing, props, locations, graphics, and other production design processes.
- Working knowledge of SketchUp, AutoCAD, Adobe Photoshop, Vectorworks, or comparable tools used in production design, set planning, visual development, and presentation.
- Practical understanding of production design budgeting, scheduling, preparation, and working within different production scales and resource levels.
- Strong communication, presentation, and collaborative skills.
- Current knowledge of industry practices, professional protocols, and Art Department expectations.
- Professional, supportive, collaborative, and student-focused approach to instruction.

Working Conditions

- On-site instruction at InFocus Film School in Vancouver, BC.
- Casual instructional schedule based on program and course requirements.




- Primarily daytime instruction; schedule may vary depending on program requirements.
- Successful candidates must be legally eligible to work in Canada and be located within the Greater Vancouver area.

Compensation $45–$60 per instructional contact hour, depending on experience.
