Role Description:

Public Members appointed to the roster for quasi-judicial boards or committees of PROs are a key mechanism that the Government of Alberta utilizes to ensure the accountability of PROs. Public Members are appointed by Ministerial Order, to:

- ensure professional governance activities for that profession are conducted in a manner that protects and serves the public interest;
- review the complaints and investigation reports about complaints against registrants made by the public, regulated professionals, and all matters that the Committee decides to investigate of its own motion;
- attend hearings in a discipline tribunal or an appeal tribunal and recommend appropriate disciplinary actions or measures regarding the conduct of investigated registrants;
- act fairly and in the public interest;
- adhere to statutory requirements; and
- develop and foster professional standards.

Public Members must:
- have qualified, volunteer,



and/or non-profit experience that is relevant and valuable to a quasi-judicial board or committee of a PRO. This may or may not include previous experience serving on a board, council, executive committee, practice review board, discipline and appeal tribunal, hearing tribunal, complaint review committee, or investigative committee;
- ensure the views from multiple sources are considered in the decisions being made by the quasi-judicial board or committee;
- prepare for, attend, and participate in hearings, meetings and business of the quasi-judicial board or committee; and
- participate fully in the decisions being made by the quasi-judicial board or committee.
