Volunteer Scrum Master (Remote)

Grey-box is social innovation technology non-profit that is working on sustainable projects that can support those affected by the digital divide. We are structured under the principle of mobile-first and remote-first. Diversity is not only encouraged, it is an integral part of the strength of the team and its projects. We are looking for volunteer scrum masters to help support our projects!

A Scrum Master is a servant-leader for the Scrum Team who facilitates Scrum events, removes impediments, and helps the team work within Scrum practices to maximize value delivery.

- Product Owner: The person responsible for maximizing the value of the product and the work of the development team. At Grey-Box, the product owner is usually the Unit Lead, since they know their project or function goals and history the most.
- Scrum Team: A self-organizing group including developers, Scrum Master, and Product Owner who work together to deliver product increments.
- Sprint: A time-boxed iteration in Scrum, typically 1-4 weeks, during which a usable and potentially releasable product increment is created.
- Done: A clear and concise definition indicating when a product backlog item or task is considered complete.

Core Responsibilities
- Facilitate Scrum Events: Plan and run Scrum meetings, sprint planning, sprint review, and retrospective sessions effectively.
- Support the Product Owner: Help maintain and refine the product backlog, and ensure goals and priorities are clear to the team.
- Remove Impediments: Identify and address obstacles that block the team’s progress promptly.
- Coach the Team: Guide the team in Agile and Scrum processes, promote self-organization, and foster continuous improvement.
- Promote Collaboration: Build trust, encourage open communication, and help create a positive, collaborative team environment.
- Shield the Team:



Protect the team from external interruptions and distractions to maintain focus on sprint goals.
- Measure and Improve: Facilitate regular reflection and feedback cycles to increase team efficiency and effectiveness.
- Engage Stakeholders: Facilitate productive collaboration between the Scrum Team and external stakeholders.

- Build Relationships: Develop trust by having one-on-one conversations and actively listening to team members and stakeholders.
- Observe and Assess: Watch current team practices carefully before suggesting improvements.
- Support Transparency: Help the Product Owner and team maintain clarity in goals, progress, and challenges.
- Facilitate with Purpose: Keep Scrum events focused, timeboxed, and effective.
- Remove Barriers: Proactively identify and solve impediments to keep the team moving forward.
- Foster Collaboration: Encourage openness, respect, and recognition within the team.
- Serve and Lead: Practice servant leadership by supporting the team’s needs and development.
- Promote Continuous Improvement: Regularly reflect on outcomes and adapt practices for better results.
- Stay Accessible and Empathetic: Be available for team support and demonstrate understanding of their challenges.

This role offers a flexible schedule, asynchronous & remote work, hands-on experience, and rapid feedback on your work.

- Volunteer role
- Duration: About 80 hours over 4 months, minimum 5 hours a week

UNI is an open-source low-cost device and an Android application that allows Wi-Fi access to everyone, everywhere, even in areas without reliable or safe internet. With a simple click to upload, Slides, PDFs, videos, Moodle, databases, or even copies of entire websites can be made available offline for free.

Project Codex uses AI to translate medical databases in several languages and regions to facilitate international operations. It can be accessed via a mobile site or a tool such as WhatsApp. The Medical Codex project aims to provide an easy-to-use tool that can help coordinate medical equipment between countries and to quickly translate medical terms across multiple languages while accounting for local variations such as brands and generics.

Project Symmetry is an open-source application leveraging AI to accelerate Wikipedia's translation efforts in less-represented languages (less than 1 million articles) by building a semantic understanding of similar articles in various Wikipedia languages and providing relevant translations for missing information.

Project Mesh is an open-source application that enables Android devices to connect and send files and messages over long distances without requiring internet connectivity.

Project Scraper is a Google Chrome extension that enables offline access to a web page or an entire website with just a few clicks.
