Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced Analytical Method Development Chemist to develop, validate, implement, and troubleshoot analytical methods supporting nicotine, tobacco, vaping and related products.

The candidate should combines strong hands-on analytical chemistry expertise with practical knowledge of Health Canada requirements, applicable ISO standards, and ISO/IEC 17025 laboratory practices.

Ideal Candidate

We are looking for a hands-on method developer rather than solely a routine QC analyst—someone capable of taking a regulatory testing requirement, determining the appropriate analytical approach, developing and validating the method, establishing appropriate quality controls, and successfully transferring the method into routine commercial laboratory testing.

Duties

- Develop, optimize, validate, verify and transfer analytical methods for nicotine-containing products, tobacco, e-liquids, smoke and vaping aerosols.
- Perform method development using GC-FID, GC-MS, HPLC/UHPLC, LC-MS/MS and other applicable analytical technologies.
- Develop and support testing for nicotine and relevant constituents/emissions, including TSNAs, carbonyls, VOCs, metals, propylene glycol, glycerol, moisture and other regulated analytes.
- Establish validation parameters including accuracy, precision, specificity, linearity, range, LOD/LOQ, robustness and measurement uncertainty.
- Interpret and implement analytical requirements established by Health Canada regulations and official tobacco testing methods.
- Apply relevant ISO tobacco and vaping standards, including ISO 20714 and ISO 20768, as applicable.




- Support method implementation and accreditation within an ISO/IEC 17025 laboratory workplace.
- Author and review analytical methods, SOPs, validation protocols/reports and technical documentation.
- Troubleshoot analytical methods and instrumentation and investigate atypical or out-of-specification results.
- Monitor evolving Canadian and international regulatory requirements affecting nicotine, tobacco and vaping product testing.

Requirements

- B.Sc., M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry, Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences or a related discipline.
- 5+ years of analytical laboratory experience, with demonstrated experience in analytical method development and validation.
- Direct experience with nicotine, tobacco, vaping, smoke/aerosol or closely related analytical testing strongly preferred.
- Strong hands-on experience with GC and/or LC-based analytical techniques; GC-MS and LC-MS/MS experience is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of Health Canada tobacco/vaping regulations and testing requirements and relevant ISO standards.
- Experience working within an ISO/IEC 17025-accredited laboratory is strongly preferred.
- Experience with smoking/vaping machines, aerosol collection systems, ICP-MS/ICP-OES or other specialized tobacco-testing instrumentation is an asset.
