Senior Power BI Designer – Enterprise Semantic Layer

About the role

We are seeking a Senior Power BI Designer to design and build an enterprise semantic layer that enables consistent, trusted reporting across the client’s organization. This is a hands-on role combining solution design, development, documentation, and coaching for a client resource who will help support the solution.

The project has an urgent start. A key client resource is leaving this week, so the successful candidate must be available to interview promptly and participate in knowledge transfer.

Key responsibilities

- Assess the current reporting environment, data sources, existing Power BI assets, and business requirements.
- Design an enterprise semantic layer with reusable measures, clear business definitions, consistent relationships, and a structure that supports reporting across teams.
- Build, test, and refine Power BI semantic models using Power Query, DAX, and appropriate data modelling practices.
- Work with business and technical stakeholders to resolve differences in metric definitions and translate reporting needs into model design.
- Consider performance, refresh, security, maintainability, and appropriate access controls in the solution.
- Document the model, key calculations, design decisions, and support procedures.




- Coach a designated client resource through hands-on knowledge sharing so they can maintain and extend the solution.
- Participate in the time-sensitive knowledge transfer from the departing client resource.

Requirements

Required qualifications

- At least 7 years of experience in business intelligence and data modelling, including at least 5 years of hands-on Power BI experience and proven delivery of enterprise semantic models.
- Senior-level, hands-on experience designing and delivering Power BI semantic models for enterprise reporting.
- Strong knowledge of dimensional data modelling, DAX, Power Query, and Power BI model performance.
- Experience defining reusable business measures and bringing consistency to reporting across multiple users or teams.
- Ability to work with stakeholders to clarify requirements and explain technical decisions in plain language.
- Experience documenting solutions and coaching or mentoring other team members.
- Ability to work independently in a remote client environment and move quickly through discovery and delivery.

Preferred qualifications
- Experience with shared semantic models used by multiple reports or business areas.
- Familiarity with Power BI governance, deployment practices, and row-level security.
- Experience taking over an existing reporting workplace and conducting structured knowledge transfer.
