Description The Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Specialist, Research Infrastructure & Facilities. This Full time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute is a partnership between the University of Calgary and Cancer Care Alberta/Alberta Health Services. The focus of the Institute is to support research that addresses the challenge of cancer, at the biological, personal, and societal levels from developing and testing new approaches to screening, detection, diagnosis, and treatment to researching how to ensure the patient lives well with and beyond cancer.

The Research Infrastructure and Operations Specialist reports to the Institute Director and is responsible for all facility-related aspects of the Institute's operations, including managing and arranging for the servicing of equipment and infrastructure, managing internally assigned space and equipment-related expenses, and advising Institute leadership regarding budgeting for facilities and forecasting future requirements, all in compliance with the university's policy and procedures.

The Research Infrastructure and Operations Specialist works in a dynamic environment where there is continuous change and shifting priorities. The incumbent must therefore be comfortable working with a high degree of independent judgement and decision making, while also communicating effectively with the Charbonneau leadership team to keep them abreast of emerging issues as required.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Support Space and Common Equipment Management:

- Acting as the Institute's primary liaison to Facilities Development (FD) and Facilities Management to define scope, coordinate logistics, and facilitate internal moves, minor renovations, and upgrades
- Facilitating lab check outs and coordinating the decommissioning process in strict compliance with Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S;) protocols, ensuring proper clearance, hazardous material handling, and asset transfers in alignment with university requirements
- Coordinate key and electronic access requests through central Campus Security / Facilities Operations and coordinating custodial requests with Facilities Management. and minor office renovations and upgrades, as required
- Overseeing the maintenance and repair of common equipment
- Liaising with internal University facilities personnel, SCM, and authorized external service vendors/contractors for equipment maintenance and facility coordination
- Maintaining an equipment inventory and conducting periodic audits
- Ordering supplies for common equipment and facilities, as required
- Preparing service agreement requests and coordinating equipment maintenance renewals and asset disposition through Supply Chain Management (SCM) in accordance with university procurement procedures

Operational Planning and Management
- Contributes to the development of infrastructure grants (e.g., CFIs) and other competitive grants by providing expert advice to Institute leadership and researchers on the space and equipment components




- Represents the Institute on committees or projects related to space, core facilities, shared equipment, etc., both at the Cumming School of Medicine and Cancer Care Alberta / Alberta Health Services
- Liaises with Cumming School of Medicine research institutes and administrative leadership as well as Cancer Care Alberta leadership on matters related to policies, procedures, and compliance and ensures their implementation and administration within Institute facilities
- Fosters and maintains strong relationships with Institute faculty, Cumming School of Medicine departments/Institutes, and main campus units at the University, as well as with Cancer Care Alberta / Alberta Health Services and funding agencies

Facilities Expense Processing and Budgeting:
- Contributes to the development and maintenance of internal operational workflows and expenditure tracking procedures for Institute equipment and spaces, in alignment with University Financial Services policies
- Working directly with the Institute Director, manages the processing of facilities expenses and accounting and supports financial reporting for the institute
- Supports the onboarding and orientation of Institute lab and administrative personnel on university financial systems (e.g., eFIN, PeopleSoft) for equipment and operational supply processing

Qualifications / Requirements

- MSc in a science- or health-related field with related laboratory facility experience. A Laboratory Technician Diploma may be considered
- A minimum of 5-10 years of progressive work experience related to the primary purpose of the position. A combination of experience and skills will be considered
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills are required to engage effectively with stakeholders, including staff, faculty, and students at the Institute, UofC, and Cancer Care Alberta/Alberta Health Services
- The incumbent must be able to handle several projects simultaneously, and work with individuals and groups from across the Institute and broader University to plan and manage space and equipment requests. With conflicting deadlines to manage, flexibility and composure are required

- Maintains the highest level of discretion, integrity, and trust in all dealings
- Excellent professionalism, diplomacy, and a high degree of confidentiality
- Strong organizational and project management skills
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills
- A successful and dedicated team player, able to make significant contributions towards the collective efforts and success of the Institute
- Understanding of University policies/procedures. Experience using PeopleSoft and eFIN
