NOTE: This position requires a flexible work schedule, including occasional evening work, potentially up to five evenings per week depending on the semester's lab schedule.

SCOPE

Reporting to the Technical Supervisor, the incumbent serves as a resource person for faculty, students and staff in regard, but not limited to the maintenance, fabrication, repair, assembly, operation, demonstration and proper use of laboratory equipment. This may also include manufacturing support.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

- Maintain, repair, inspect, test, calibrate, troubleshoot, and modernize lab equipment and facilities (scheduled maintenance, operational tests, lubrication, sensor/controller/interface upgrades) to ensure safe, reliable operation as per codes, standards and safety regulations.
- Fabricate lab equipment and experimental setups; interpret and finalize mechanical and electrical/electronic engineering drawings and designs.
- Write clear procedures for equipment operation and maintenance.
- Operate hand tools, power tools, machine tools, and electro-mechanical/hydraulic equipment.
- Apply working knowledge of mechanical, industrial, and aerospace engineering concepts and lab processes.
- Demonstrate and supervise safe equipment use for students, faculty, and staff; oversee activities in assigned lab spaces.
- Lead and train others in technical/engineering support work.
- Supervise students preparing, fabricating, and testing components for course and research projects.
- Support lab demonstrators, staff, and researchers on operational and safety issues.
- Maintain adequate supplies and equipment; manage consumable inventory and equipment loans.



Procure materials and prepare purchase requisitions.
- Organize equipment documentation and provide reference materials to the lab community.
- Assist with preparing reports, experiments, analyses, and correspondence; submit work reports.
- Develop, instruct, and monitor lab safety procedures; ensure protocols are followed.

QUALIFICATIONS

- Diploma of Collegial Studies (three-year technical DEC) in Mechanical Engineering, Aircraft Maintenance, Electrical or Electro/Mechanical Technology and a minimum of four years of related experience.
- Experience with conventional and CNC machining and general fabrication techniques.
- Experience using heavy tools, including large-tool and assembly work (building rigs and fixtures).
- Experience operating 3D printers and proficiency with 3D CAD software.
- Working knowledge of material science and tensile testing machines.
- Experience with strain gauge implementation and data acquisition systems.
- Familiarity with furnaces, ovens, and temperature chambers.
- Experience with material testing equipment (Charpy, Izod, tensile, compression) and surface finishing (e.g., sanding).
- Knowledge of composite material processing (repair, manufacturing and fabrication).
- Knowledge of industry standards relating to responsibilities (ASTM, ASME, etc.).
- Knowledge of gears, powertrains, and mechanical drive systems (U-joints, transmissions).
- Familiarity with mechanical fasteners, bearings, and mechanical systems.
- Knowledge of small engine repair and maintenance.
- Experience with Labview.
- Good knowledge (Level 4) of spoken and written English and basic knowledge (Level 3) of spoken French to assist and instruct students.
- Basic knowledge in Word, Excel and Outlook to create and format documents and spreadsheets, and the ability to learn and adapt to new software as required.
- Ability to solve complex technical problems.
- Bring strong interpersonal and organizational skills, with a disciplined, detail-oriented approach
- Must be a team player with excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Certifications or training in relevant safety procedures (e.g., WHMIS, first aid, confined space entry).
- Successful completion of an eye/peripheral vision examination, color blind test and baseline audiometric screening.
- Will require use of respiratory protection and enrollment in the University’s Respiratory Protection Program.




- Will require use of hearing protection and enrollment in the University’s Hearing Conservation Program will be required
- Have physical ability to lift/carry/move without assistance up to 23 kg (50 lbs.) and with assistance up to 34 kg (75 lbs.).
