Duties
Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s (DFO), Ontario and Prairie Region, Aquatic Ecosystems Branch, Sea Lamprey Control Division is seeking enthusiastic people to join its team as Sea Lamprey Control Program Technicians (EG-03 and EG-04) dedicated to the delivery of its policy, program and regulatory responsibilities under the Fisheries Act and Great Lakes Fisheries Convention Act.Sea lamprey technicians are primarily involved with delivery of field services including assessment and treatment of sea lamprey populations in streams and lakes throughout the Great Lakes, capturing information supporting regulatory needs, and maintaining program related infrastructure.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada is responsible for policies and programs in support of Canada's economic, ecological and scientific interests in oceans and inland waters; for the conservation and sustainable utilization of Canada's fisheries resources in marine and inland waters; for leading and facilitating federal policies and programs on oceans; and for secure, effective and environmentally sound marine services responsive to the needs of Canadians in a global economy.Sea Lamprey Control Technicians will be based in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario but travel to locations around all of the Great Lakes in Canada and the USA to deliver their duties. This exciting opportunity lets one work at a diversity of field locations from urban to remote and for extended periods of time (2-3 weeks on average) throughout the period typically from March to November of each year.

Intent of the process
This process will be used to staff multiple indeterminate Sea Lamprey Control Technician EG-03 and EG-04 positions within Fisheries and Oceans Canada Aquatic Ecosystems in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario. These positions are based in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario and cannot be delivered remotely. A pool of qualified candidates will be established and may be used to staff similar positions with various tenures within Fisheries and Oceans Canada Aquatic Ecosystems in Sault St Marie, Ontario.

Pleasure Craft Operators Card

Transport dangerous goods using a variety of vehicles and vessels





Travel within Canada and the United States often for periods of up to 20 but possibly up to 27 consecutive days with accommodations in motels

Travel to remote locations via truck, aircraft, boat, or other means with occasional overnight stays in tents

Conduct strenuous work out-of-doors under varying climatic conditions, sometimes in remote locations

Lift and carry, often over uneven ground, supplies and equipment weighing up to 23 kg

Work shiftwork and overtime

EDUCATION

EXPERIENCE

Experience implementing standardized protocols (scientific or technical)

Experience conducting scientific sampling in aquatic environments, or other transferrable natural resource management or natural resource support functions

(EG-04 ONLY) Experience practicing Health and Safety and maintaining a safe and compliant work environment

EDUCATION

Graduation with a degree or diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution in a natural, physical or applied science with specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the position.

EXPERIENCE

Experience in an aquatic natural resource or aquatic invasive species program

Experience with scientific fish sampling techniques

Experience with pesticide application and regulations

Experience using CAD or GIS software

Experience working at construction sites or collaborating with engineering firms and contractors

Experience using digital survey equipment to measure and benchmark land features in relation to water features like culverts, dams, ditches, roads and bridges
