We are looking to recruit an experienced Legal Cashier to join our Finance Team based at our Head Office in central Hastings.

The Role
The Legal Cashier will undertake a broad range of day-to-day legal cashiering responsibilities, helping to ensure the smooth and efficient running of the Finance function.

You will be responsible for ensuring that financial transactions are processed accurately, promptly and in accordance with the SRA Accounts Rules and the firm’s own accounting and risk management policies and procedures.

The role covers both client and business account transactions and includes bank reconciliations, receipts and payments, electronic banking, completion transactions, client interest and general accounts administration.

We are looking for an experienced Legal Cashier who understands the importance of accuracy, effective financial controls and the proper handling of client money within a regulated law firm.

Key Responsibilities

Undertake reconciliations of client and business bank accounts.

Identify and deal appropriately with out-of-date cheques.

Monitor the banking system for electronic payments throughout the day, including CHAPS, BACS and Faster Payments.

Check completion transactions and set up and process CHAPS and other electronic payments in accordance with the firm’s policies and procedures.

Check and arrange foreign payments as required.

Identify, allocate and post incoming electronic and manual receipts accurately to the appropriate accounts and matters.

Process and bank client and business account receipts.





Calculate and apply client interest where due.

Process credit and debit card payments.

Process and reconcile petty cash transactions.

Deal professionally and efficiently with internal and external accounts enquiries.

Maintain accurate accounting records and appropriate audit trails.

Ensure client account transactions are processed in accordance with the SRA Accounts Rules and the firm’s internal procedures.

Support the wider Finance Team and colleagues across the firm as required.

Undertake general finance and administrative duties necessary for the efficient operation of the Finance function.

Person Specification
Essential

A minimum of three years’ previous Legal Cashier experience, including experience of client account transactions.

Up-to-date working knowledge of the SRA Accounts Rules.

A good understanding of the principles and responsibilities associated with handling client money.

Strong numerical skills.

Excellent attention to detail and a high level of accuracy.

Good organisational and time management skills.

Ability to prioritise workloads and work effectively within deadlines.

Positive IT skills, including Microsoft Excel and Word.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Professional and confident telephone manner.

Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

High levels of integrity, discretion and confidentiality.

Educated to GCSE standard or equivalent.

Desirable

Previous experience using Partner for Windows (P4W).

What Success Looks Like
Success in the role will be demonstrated by:

Client and business account transactions being processed accurately and promptly.

Client money being handled safely and in accordance with the SRA Accounts Rules and the firm’s procedures.

Bank and petty cash reconciliations being completed accurately and within required timescales.

Electronic payments and receipts being processed efficiently with appropriate checks and controls.





Completion transactions being supported accurately and on time.

Client interest being calculated and applied correctly where required.

Accounting queries and discrepancies being identified and resolved promptly.

Accurate accounting records and audit trails being maintained.

Colleagues receiving professional, responsive and reliable support from the Finance Team.

The firm’s accounting and risk management procedures being consistently followed.

What We’re Looking For
We’re looking for an experienced Legal Cashier who takes pride in accuracy, understands the importance of client money compliance and can work confidently across a varied legal accounts function.

You’ll need to be organised, numerate and comfortable managing a range of transactions and priorities throughout the working day. You’ll also need to work collaboratively with colleagues across the firm and provide a professional and responsive service when dealing with both internal and external enquiries.

Previous Legal Cashier experience is essential for this role, together with an up-to-date working knowledge of the SRA Accounts Rules.
