The Company
Cover Genius is the global infrastructure for embedded protection. Active in over 60 countries and all 50 US States, we protect the customers of the world’s largest digital companies, including Klarna, Revolut, Stripe, Priceline, Agoda, Booking.com, Turkish Airlines, Tongcheng Travel, eBay, and Uber, with seamless, end-to-end experiences. Cover Genius has protected more than 73M customers globally across 240M policies with USD $3.2BN in gross written sales.
Coming off a stellar year with 40% YoY revenue growth and a recent $100M capital raise, putting our valuation at $1.9BN, we are accelerating into our next phase of growth. As part of our team, you’ll help drive our AI-first roadmap, developing hyper-personalization engines, agentic distribution, and automated claims infrastructure, while building the scalable technology powering the quick-growing $70B embedded protection market.
Our people are: Accountable, customer-obsessed, collaborative, driven
Our people are not: Passive, defensive, siloed, hesitant
About the Role:
As an Engineering Manager in the Travel XCover Squad, you will own the technical vision and execution for our Travel integrations with new and existing partners. Your primary objective will be to lead a dedicated team supporting the Travel domain's goal to be the indispensable global partner for travel businesses by delivering intelligent and adaptive coverage solutions.
Your squad owns three ways partners can sell protection with us: embedded integrations, where a partner calls our APIs directly from their own checkout; XCover Elements, a drop-in UI layer partners configure rather than build; and Standalone, our own hosted purchase flow for partners without a checkout to embed into. The squad also builds Ancillaries — travel products beyond insurance, such as baggage and disruption cover. You don't need prior insurance experience; you do need to enjoy partner-facing integration work and the reliability bar that comes with being in someone else's checkout.
To drive success in this role, you will have proven experience in people management, strong technical leadership in a modern microservices environment, and a background in architecting highly reliable systems. As the Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for mentoring and growing a team of talented engineers, guiding our technical strategy and executing our ambitious product roadmap. A key part of the role is to foster a culture of innovation, ownership and operational excellence.
We're building AI-first. You'll champion a culture where agentic tools like Claude Code and Gemini are core parts of the engineering workflow — not novelties, but multipliers that let the team ship faster without sacrificing quality. You'll guide your team in adopting AI-augmented development practices, from code generation to testing to documentation, and help scale what "agentic software engineering" looks like at Cover Genius across a mature, established squad.
Regular collaboration with internal product, engineering and partner-facing teams will be key in ensuring we achieve our goals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and mentor engineering teams to achieve the Travel domain's annual objectives and key results.
- Translate product vision and OKRs into actionable engineering initiatives and technical roadmaps.
- Foster a culture of innovation, experimentation, continuous improvement, and responsible AI adoption — guiding the team to integrate AI tools into their workflows while holding the line on quality and security.
- Collaborate closely with product managers, designers and other stakeholders to translate business requirements into robust technical solutions that deliver exceptional customer and partner experiences.
- Drive technical excellence through code reviews, design discussions, and architectural decisions that balance speed with long-term maintainability.
- Plan staffing and capacity to deliver the roadmap predictably, optimising for outcomes rather than output.
What you will bring:
- Bachelor/Masters degree in Computer Science or Engineering, or equivalent practical experience, with at least 5 years of software engineering experience and at least 4 years leading and scaling high-performing engineering teams.
- Experience leading agile scrum teams of 5-7 engineers with diverse experience levels.
- Capability to lead, develop, grow and mentor engineers.
- Experience fostering AI-first development practices — you've guided teams to adopt agentic tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Gemini, or similar) as core workflow accelerators, and you understand where they add value versus where traditional approaches are better.
- Strong technical foundation in modern backend technologies (Node.js/TypeScript, Python, or similar); experience with APIs and third-party integrations.
- Understanding of microservices architectures, cloud infrastructure (AWS), and containerization (Docker/Kubernetes).
- Enough familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform or similar) to guide and review your team's infrastructure decisions.
- Demonstrated experience with relational and NoSQL databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MongoDB) and effective data modelling.
- Comfort with observability tooling (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, ELK stack, Datadog) and the judgement to hold a team to a high monitoring and alerting bar.
What you will have: Team Leadership & People Development:
- Creates an inclusive environment where engineers do their best work; seeks feedback and adapts ways of working.
- Coaches engineers in collaborative problem-solving, customer-centric thinking, and end-to-end ownership.
- Delivers timely, constructive feedback; develops talent and aligns individual growth with team success.
Ownership & Delivery:
- Creates a culture of ownership and accountability; pushes for decisions to be made effectively and removes blockers.
- Aligns team work with product strategy and OKRs; focuses on outcomes, not just output.
- Proactively manages risk - escalates issues appropriately and keeps stakeholders informed.
- Brings together work from multiple contributors into cohesive, achievable plans.
Technical Excellence:
- Empowers engineers to achieve a high bar of engineering excellence; creates space for testing, automation, observability, and documentation.
- Holds the team's work to high standards and raises the bar through how design and review get done.
- Ensures the team owns operations of their systems — incident response, and continuous improvement.
AI-First Mindset:
- Fosters a culture of responsible AI adoption; encourages experimentation while ensuring quality and security.
- Leads the team to evaluate and integrate AI tools that improve productivity, quality, and velocity.
- Understands the ethical and security implications of using AI tools with company data and code.
- Thinks in terms of leverage - automates the repetitive, focuses human attention on judgment calls.
- Helps the team adopt AI workflows; shares what works and raises the floor for everyone.
