About Foglio Custom Books
Founded on a love of books, Foglio Custom Books helps independent authors bring their manuscripts to life through editing, design, typesetting, and printing. We pair qualified craftsmanship with transparent, collaborative guidance, respecting each author's creative vision while ensuring they keep full rights and royalties.
We work diligently and efficiently to provide a dedicated service to the author, making them feel like a VIP client.
About the role
We are looking for someone who genuinely loves books and has a high interest in building a career in book production. This is a hands-on, entry-level role supporting the owner of the company - an experienced book professional - as manuscripts are developed into polished, print-ready books. You will learn by observing closely, asking thoughtful questions, completing real work, and gradually taking on greater responsibility.
You are not expected to arrive knowing every part of the process. You are expected to be curious, dependable, attentive, and willing to put focused effort into both creative and routine tasks. Mistakes are part of learning; what matters is taking responsibility, listening to feedback, and applying what you learn the next time.
How you will contribute
· Observe and learn Foglio's complete workflow for moving a book from manuscript to print, including editing, typesetting, cover design and more.
· Assist with organizing manuscripts, images, project files, revisions, and production records.
· As skills develop, support editing, proofreading, formatting, typesetting,
and layout work under guidance.
· Review book interiors and covers for typographical errors, inconsistencies, missing elements, and layout issues.
· Help prepare and check files against printer requirements and established quality standards.
· Record instructions carefully, maintain useful notes and checklists, and complete assigned tasks within agreed timelines.
· Communicate questions, progress, and potential problems early, and take on more independent work as your skills develop.
· Other tasks and assignments, as necessary.
What you can expect to learn
You will gain practical exposure to the entire process of bringing a book to life - editing, design, typesetting, proofreading, print specifications, e-books, quality control and more. You will learn to evaluate book interiors and covers, manage revisions and deadlines, and gradually handle more substantial parts of a book project.
The successful candidates drive and interest will determine how far this role will develop and in what time.
The kind of person who will thrive here
· You love books! You want to understand how they are produced and are willing to start with the fundamentals.
· You watch and listen attentively, take positive notes, ask thoughtful questions, and remember what you have been shown.
· You are comfortable receiving direct feedback – sometimes in a high-pressure environment - and revising your work.
· You take ownership of mistakes, learn from them, and work to avoid repeating them.
· You are patient and detail-oriented, even when a task is repetitive or requires several careful reviews.
· You are reliable, organized, comfortable using computers and various software, and able to follow through without constant reminders.
Previous book-production experience is not required; curiosity, care, strong written English, and the ability to learn are more important. Related education or experience and familiarity with Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, or similar tools are assets.
Working arrangement and compensation
This position is based primarily at our Vaughan location, with occasional remote work possible by agreement as the successful candidate becomes more independent. Hours and schedule will be confirmed during hiring. Compensation is $25/hr. As your skills, accuracy, and judgment develop, there may be opportunities to expand the scope of the position.
