Overview
The Market Hog Production Manager is responsible for the performance of the market hogs owned by Jansen Family Livestock. This position involves managing all aspects of market hog production including the preparation of the barn, receiving feeder pigs, caring for these pigs until they reach market weight, shipping these pigs, cleaning and disinfecting, and ongoing repairs and maintenance. The Market Hog Production Manager is a key team member within Jansen Family Livestock because of the role’s immediate connection to the customer and their ability to drive profitability through exceptional livestock management. The recipient requires in-depth knowledge of raising livestock, exceptional stockperson skills, and a propensity for attention to detail. The Market Hog Production Manager must be organized and have strong initiative and ambition as the role will primarily be independent work.

Duties

- Complete a full chore once per day - go into each pen and walk the perimeter with a calm and careful approach. Sort out any compromised animals to provide appropriate treatment and support.
- Complete a barn scan at the end of every day in each facility. This involves walking the alleyway to check for any emergencies that need to be addressed before the next day’s chores.
- Receive 30-kilogram feeder pigs from the transporter while preserving solid biosecurity between the trailer and driver.
- Train pigs from a young age to go through the scale and get comfortable with the equipment. Continue to weigh and sort out the pigs that are market weight.
- Load sorted market hogs onto the trailer per the instructions provided by the driver.
- Continuously monitor the barn for repairs and maintenance that need to be done. Immediate repairs that need to be done include the feeding system, water system,



and ventilation system. Complete repairs where capable.
- Monitor bin levels, estimate feed consumption, and order feed as appropriate from the designated feed supplier.
- Wash and disinfect the barn between batches to reduce the disease load present for the newly placed pigs.
- Be the primary contact for the barn including barn alarms, logistics, feed, veterinarian etc.

- Thoughtful and empathetic with an ability to see the world through the eyes of the animals they are looking after
- Comfortable working with large livestock and in dirty environments
- Prompt and clear communicator that understands how their communication impacts the success of the system that they are working in
- Ability to analyze situations, research problems, and recommend and implement solutions
- Understanding of basic construction, electrical and plumbing troubleshooting and repairs
- A willingness to learn and develop the range of skills required to manage a market hog operation

This role is ideal for individuals who are passionate about raising livestock, driven to create value for customers, and excited to work within a fun and high performing family farming business. A large farm house is available to rent on farm for the successful candidate.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $25.00-$30.00 per hour

Expected hours: 35 – 55 per week
