Liquor Store General Manager | East Kootenay, BC

Our client is seeking a hands‑on, customer‑focused Liquor Store General Manager to lead the full daily operations of a busy retail liquor store. This role is ideal for a strong retail operator who thrives in a quick‑paced environment, builds high‑performing teams, and takes ownership of store performance, profitability, and customer experience.

The General Manager will oversee staffing, sales, inventory, merchandising, compliance, and financial controls, ensuring the store operates efficiently and in alignment with BC liquor regulations and company standards.

Leadership Expectations

The General Manager is expected to take full ownership of store results, maintain high operational standards, proactively identify issues, and communicate openly with ownership. Success will be measured through sales performance, profitability, inventory accuracy, shrink control, customer satisfaction, and team development.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Customer Experience & Hospitality

- Lead a welcoming, service‑focused environment.
- Ensure staff are knowledgeable, approachable, and professional.
- Resolve customer concerns promptly.
- Support service flow during peak periods.
- Build strong relationships with regular customers and the local community.

Team Leadership & Development

- Hire, train, mentor, and develop a small, high‑performing team.
- Oversee scheduling, payroll tracking, attendance, and performance management.
- Set transparent expectations and hold employees accountable.




- Conduct regular staff meetings and communicate priorities.
- Foster a culture of teamwork, accountability, and customer‑first thinking.

Operations & Merchandising

- Oversee daily store operations including opening, closing, cash handling, and security.
- Ensure compliance with BC liquor laws, licence conditions, and company policies.
- Maintain a clean, organized, well‑merchandised store.
- Ensure shelves, coolers, displays, and signage meet company standards.
- Execute seasonal and promotional merchandising.

Inventory Management

- Maintain appropriate inventory levels and minimize overstock/out‑of‑stock situations.
- Oversee receiving, stock rotation, most buying and ordering, and system accuracy.
- Monitor inventory turns, slow‑moving items, discontinued products, and shrink.
- Investigate discrepancies and implement corrective measures.
- Coordinate regular inventory counts and maintain controls over high‑value products.
- Work with suppliers on product selection and promotional opportunities.

Sales, Profitability & Financial Controls

- Achieve store sales and profitability targets.
- Monitor daily, weekly, monthly, and year‑over‑year sales.
- Identify opportunities to increase sales, traffic, and gross profit.
- Manage labour costs relative to sales volumes.
- Monitor operating expenses and identify efficiencies.
- Review cash shortages, overages, voids, discounts, and unusual transactions.




- Ensure accurate deposits and reconciliations.
- Maintain strong cash‑control and loss‑prevention procedures.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

Our ideal candidate has recent experience managing daily operations of a liquor store. In addition, we are looking for someone with:

- 5+ years retail experience; 2+ years in a leadership role.
- Liquor retail experience preferred.
- Strong understanding of sales, margins, labour management, inventory control, and profitability.
- Strong organizational and problem‑solving skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and customer‑service abilities.
- Proficiency in MS Office (Excel).
- Experience with Barnet POS or similar systems (asset).
- Solid knowledge of BC liquor laws and compliance requirements.
- Valid Serving It Right and Occupational First Aid Level 1.
- Ability to lift up to 25 kg and work in an active retail environment.
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.

Additional Information:
This is a full‑time position requiring flexibility based on operational needs. Store hours typically run from 9:00 AM to 11:00 PM, and scheduling will reflect business demands.
