Qualifications

MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:

- MSc degree in a related study area

or

- BSc degree in Food Science or related area, with a minimum of 3 years of directly related experience is required.

EXPERIENCE:

- A minimum of 1 year lab experience with experience in wheat quality testing, chemical testing and writing reports is required.
- Experience working with/training students is required.
- Experience in analysing complex datasets using statistical tools such as SAS, SPSS or Origin and interpreting findings is required.
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

- Experience with job-related software (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) is required.
- Understanding and ability to calibrate, maintain, trouble shoot and operate lab equipment is required.
- Ability to train students is required.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral) are required.
- Ability to function independently with minimal supervision is required.
- Self motivation and problem solving skills are required.
- Time management skills are required.




- Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality are required.

Key responsibilities

Operation and maintenance of specialized equipment used for wheat quality testing

- Operate specialized equipment to conduct wheat quality testing on various samples,
- Run the testing program for wheat samples developed in the UManitoba wheat breeding program
- Develop technical reports related to quality testing data
- Organize the Grain Chemistry and Processing Quality testing laboratory which houses the wheat quality testing equipment
- Sets-up, maintains, calibrates and troubleshoots various analytical instruments in the lab (wheat quality testing equipment and analytical equipment)
- Develop and optimize methods for quality analysis for specialized samples as well as material not characterized previously
- Repairs or initiates repairs of equipment as required ensuring minimal down time

Administrative duties
- Advanced statistical analysis of complex datasets using software such as SAS, SPSS or Origin
- Verifies results generated by students and assists in research as needed
- Assists students with reporting results, writing and submissions to the PI on a regular basis
- Develop written research reports and other relevant reports




- Communicates with researchers/students to clearly identify their research needs
- Identifying lab needs and overall management of the lab

Training of students
- Train students and visiting scholars on wheat quality testing methods and other analytical methods used in the lab

Ensuring a clean and safe work environment
- Assist in training students and visiting scholars on waste handling and disposal of hazardous materials according to UM Policy
- Keep current with updated safety procedures and pass information on to staff/faculty/students
- Perform other duties as assigned
