About Us The Alberta Pipe Trades College (APTC), operated by the Edmonton Pipe Trades Educational Trust (EPT), is a leading skilled trades training institution providing apprenticeship, pre-apprenticeship, journeyperson upgrading, certification, and industry training programs.
Our college provides training to approximately 1,000 learners each year in a busy, professional environment focused on delivering high-quality education to Alberta's skilled trades workforce.
We are seeking a dependable and detail-oriented Bookkeeper / Accounting Clerk to join our administrative team and support the day-to-day financial operations of the college.
The Position The Bookkeeper / Accounting Clerk will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records and completing a variety of bookkeeping, accounting, payroll, reconciliation, and administrative functions.
The successful candidate will be organized, accurate, dependable, and comfortable working independently while also collaborating with the Director of Education, administrative staff, accountants, auditors, and other stakeholders.
This position requires a high level of attention to detail, confidentiality, professionalism, and the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform day-to-day and full-cycle bookkeeping functions
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records
- Record, code, and categorize financial transactions
- Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, and other financial accounts
- Manage accounts payable, including invoice processing and payment preparation
- Manage accounts receivable, invoicing, and payment tracking
- Process payroll and maintain accurate payroll records
- Prepare payroll remittances and other required government remittances
- Prepare GST returns and supporting documentation
- Assist with monthly and year-end financial processes
- Prepare financial reports and supporting information for management
- Maintain organized working papers and supporting documentation
- Assist with annual budgeting and ongoing budget tracking
- Monitor expenditures and assist with budget-to-actual reporting
- Maintain accurate records related to grants, funding agreements, and program expenditures
- Prepare financial documentation required for grant reporting and audits
- Work with external accountants and auditors and provide requested financial documentation
- Review transactions and financial records for accuracy and identify discrepancies or unusual items
- Maintain accurate and organized electronic and paper financial records
- Ensure financial information is handled with appropriate confidentiality and security
- Assist with other accounting and administrative duties as required
Qualifications The ideal candidate will have:
- Previous bookkeeping or accounting experience
- Experience with Sage 50 Accounting considered a strong asset
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Outlook
- Experience with payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, GST, and bank reconciliations
- Understanding of general bookkeeping and accounting principles
- Experience preparing financial information for accountants or auditors
- Strong attention to detail and a high level of accuracy
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Ability to maintain confidentiality when handling financial, employee, and organizational information
- Positive attitude and willingness to learn and take on additional responsibilities
Experience working in a non-profit organization, educational institution, union workplace, or organization administering government grants and funding agreements would be considered an asset.
Formal education in bookkeeping, accounting, business administration, or a related field would also be considered an asset.
Compensation & Benefits
$24.00–$28.00 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.
