The Common Dog is a small, local dog training and walking business that has been proudly serving the Cowichan Valley for 7.5 years.

We are looking for a dedicated, reliable and enthusiastic Structured Dog Walker / Dog Trainer to join our team. This role is ideal for someone who genuinely enjoys working with dogs and has an interest in canine behaviour, training and providing a high level of care.

As a Structured Dog Walker, you will provide exercise, structure and training practice for our clients' dogs while ensuring their safety and well-being. You will also interact with clients, provide updates about their dogs and represent The Common Dog in a qualified and positive manner.

This is a part-time, commission-based independent contractor position, primarily Wednesdays and Thursdays. There may also be opportunities for additional work, including walk & train sessions, private training, boarding and house sitting.

Position Details

- Part-time, primarily Wednesdays and Thursdays
- Approximately 3 hours of walking/hiking per day, plus pick-up and drop-off time
- Service area includes Duncan, Cobble Hill, Shawnigan Lake and surrounding areas
- Handling up to 4 dogs on leash at a time
- Commission-based compensation
- Independent contractor position — responsible for your own taxes, vehicle expenses, fuel, insurance and other business-related expenses

Duties
- Pick up and drop off dogs safely to and from their homes
- Hike and walk trails and neighbourhoods around the Duncan to Shawnigan area, rain or shine
- Provide structured walks that incorporate exercise, appropriate socialization, engagement and training practice
- Safely manage up to 4 dogs on leash
- Monitor dogs' behaviour and adjust the walk as needed based on individual needs and group dynamics
- Submit report cards to clients through our communication program following each walk
- Communicate with clients through our scheduling and communication programs




- Provide clients with relevant observations about their dog's behaviour, progress and experience
- Maintain a safe and controlled environment for all dogs throughout the walk
- Follow all safety protocols and guidelines
- Represent The Common Dog professionally when interacting with clients and the public

Requirements
- Minimum 6 months of experience working with dogs, such as dog training, dog walking, daycare, kennel work or veterinary assisting
- Understanding of canine behaviour and body language
- Genuine love for dogs and a strong interest in their well-being
- Ability to safely and confidently manage multiple dogs at once
- Strong communication and customer service skills
- Reliable, responsible and comfortable working independently
- Physically fit and able to hike/walk for extended periods in varying weather conditions
- Valid BC driver's licence
- Reliable vehicle capable of safely transporting up to 4 dogs
- Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions

Independent Contractor / Commission Position This is a commission-based independent contractor position and is not an employee position.

The successful applicant will be responsible for their own:

- Income tax and applicable tax remittances
- Vehicle expenses and fuel
- Vehicle and business insurance appropriate for the work being performed
- Any other expenses associated with operating as an independent contractor
