Boreal is a full-service land, regulatory & reclamation consulting company based in Sherwood Park, Alberta. We are currently seeking an individual to join our team as an Environment & Regulatory Specialist.

We are looking for an environmental professional who is interested in a varied consulting role, with a particular strength or interest in GIS and spatial data. GIS will be an important part of this position, but it is one component of a broader environmental and regulatory role.

The ideal candidate may have a background in environmental science, forestry, forest technology, biology, or a related discipline and have developed experience using GIS as part of their environmental work. We are less concerned with having a specific checklist of experience and more interested in finding someone who is curious, adaptable, capable of learning, and interested in taking ownership of their work.

This position will be based out of our Sherwood Park office, with an estimated 75% office / 25% field work allocation.

What You'll Do

Your work will vary depending on your experience, interests, and the projects Boreal is working on. Responsibilities may include:

- Working directly with clients and supporting land, environmental, regulatory, and reclamation projects.
- Using GIS to develop maps, figures, spatial analyses, and other mapping products for environmental and regulatory projects.
- Managing, organizing, interpreting, and quality-checking spatial and environmental data.
- Using GIS to support environmental assessments, wetland assessments, reclamation programs, surface land projects, and regulatory applications.
- Collecting and managing field data using GPS, mobile GIS, and other field data collection platforms.
- Conducting wetland assessments and delineation to support WAIF and WAIR submissions.
- Collecting, interpreting, and reporting biophysical field data in support of regulatory and reclamation applications.
- Assisting with Public Lands Act disposition,



Water Act, and Reclamation Certificate applications.
- Assisting with Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments.
- Conducting Detailed Site Assessments and supporting reclamation assessments and reporting.
- Working with environmental data to identify project constraints, environmental considerations, and reclamation requirements.
- Collaborating with land administrators, biologists, foresters, agrologists, planners, and environmental scientists on a wide range of projects.
- Developing areas of expertise and taking ownership of projects that align with your interests and strengths.
- Taking on new challenges and responsibilities as you grow within the company.

Qualifications

We are looking for an environmental skilled with a strong interest in GIS. This could include someone with a background in:

- Environmental Science
- Forestry
- Forest Technology
- Biology
- Environmental Technology
- Geography
- Agrology
- Or a related discipline

The ideal candidate will have:

- Experience using GIS as part of environmental, forestry, land, or natural resource work.
- Proficiency with ESRI ArcGIS / ArcGIS Pro.
- Experience creating maps, figures, spatial data, and other GIS products.
- Experience managing and interpreting spatial and environmental data.
- Experience with GPS, field data collection applications, or mobile GIS is an asset.
- Experience in environmental consulting, reclamation, wetland assessments, environmental site assessments, forestry, or regulatory work.
- Knowledge of Alberta environmental legislation, policies, and guidelines, including the Water Act, Public Lands Act, Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, Alberta Wetland Policy, ABWRET, and Reclamation Criteria for Wellsites and Associated Facilities, is an asset.
- Strong technical writing, data management, and organizational skills.
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- The ability to work independently while also contributing to a collaborative team.




- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

Professional designations such as P.Biol, P.Ag, RT.Ag., RPF, or RPFT are considered an asset but are not required.

Experience with AER's OneStop Tool and Authenticating Wetland Professional qualifications are also considered assets.

Pre-Employment Requirements

- Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence.
- Experience operating ATVs, ARGOs, or other off-road vehicles is an asset.
- Available to work overtime or out of town when required to meet project deadlines.
- Strong interest in and capacity for field work.
- Comfortable working in remote locations and walking through difficult terrain.
- Comfortable flying in helicopters for extended periods of time.
- Willingness to travel and participate in field programs as required.
