Estate Grounds Manager & Head Gardener

Full-Time, Permanent, Year-Round

Mulhurst Bay / Pigeon Lake, Alberta

$80,000–$100,000 per year benefits A private family is seeking an experienced Estate Grounds Manager & Head Gardener to take hands-on responsibility for the gardens, grounds and exterior maintenance of two exceptional private properties in the Pigeon Lake area.

This is a hands-on position for someone who enjoys working outdoors, understands horticulture, is mechanically capable and takes real pride in maintaining beautiful properties.

This is not a desk-based management role. The successful candidate will personally perform much of the gardening, pruning, lawn care and routine property maintenance while coordinating specialized contractors and trades when required.

The Properties The primary property at Mulhurst is currently undergoing development of an extensive formal garden and landscape, scheduled for completion in summer 2027. The successful candidate will become involved during construction and planting and ultimately assume responsibility for maintaining the completed landscape.

A new 20’ × 30’ four-season glass greenhouse/solarium is also scheduled for completion in 2027.

The second property is a substantial lakefront home on Pigeon Lake with extensive grounds, perennial gardens, beach, waterfall, dock, boats and recreational equipment.

Key Responsibilities

- Lawn mowing, trimming, edging, fertilizing and turf care
- Hands-on pruning and care of trees, shrubs, hedges and perennials
- Planting, transplanting, weeding and mulching
- Maintaining formal gardens and landscape beds
- Monitoring plant health, pests and disease
- Operating and maintaining tractors, riding mowers, utility vehicles and powered landscape equipment
- Irrigation monitoring and management
- Seasonal garden opening and closing
- General exterior property maintenance, including staining and minor repairs
- Coordinating landscape contractors and specialized trades
- Assisting with completion of the Mulhurst landscape, including planting, irrigation and landscape electrical work




- Helping establish and subsequently maintain the new four-season greenhouse
- Beach grooming, rototilling and weed control at the lake property
- Waterfall operation and routine maintenance
- Coordinating annual dock installation and removal
- Coordinating servicing, seasonal preparation and storage of boats, snowmobiles, motorcycle and related equipment
- Identifying property issues and taking responsibility for getting them resolved

Snow removal and specialized trades are contracted out.

Interior housekeeping and cleaning are handled separately and are not part of this position.

Equipment The properties have a range of equipment including a Kubota riding mower, compact tractor, side-by-side utility vehicle, trucks, trimmers, rototiller and other landscape and property-maintenance equipment.

The successful candidate should be comfortable operating this type of equipment and performing routine preventative maintenance.

Who We Are Looking For

We are looking for someone with strong practical experience in horticulture, golf-course maintenance, landscaping, grounds management or maintaining a significant property.

You should

- Have strong practical knowledge of plants, pruning, lawns and landscape maintenance
- Enjoy performing substantial hands-on outdoor work
- Be comfortable operating tractors, mowers and powered equipment
- Have good mechanical aptitude and basic property-maintenance skills
- Understand irrigation or be capable of learning it
- Be organized and capable of coordinating contractors and trades
- Be resourceful and self-directed
- Notice problems and take initiative to resolve them
- Be dependable, trustworthy and discreet
- Take pride in maintaining a property to a very high standard
- Be interested in a long-term position





We specifically welcome applications from experienced golf-course, landscape-maintenance and horticultural professionals who may not have previously worked on a private estate.

Formal horticultural education or certification is an asset but is not required for someone with strong practical experience.

Greenhouse A new four-season glass greenhouse/solarium is scheduled for completion in 2027 and is expected to include vegetables, fruit trees and other plantings.

Previous greenhouse experience is an asset but is not required. Strong horticultural fundamentals and an interest in helping develop the greenhouse program are more important.

Location & Schedule

This is a full-time, permanent, year-round position based primarily at Mulhurst Bay/Pigeon Lake, Alberta.

The successful candidate must live within reasonable daily commuting distance. No in office accommodation is provided.

Some seasonal flexibility will be required, particularly during the growing season and spring and fall opening/closing periods.

Compensation

$80,000–$100,000 per year, depending on experience and capabilities.
