At Odyssey House, our vision is to help women and children break free from the cycle of family violence. As a member of our team, you will help to ensure consistent implementation of agency policies and procedures and ensure all staff, residents and clients are cared for.
Summary of Position
Reporting to the Facilities Manager, the main objective of the Facilities Cook is to plan and prepare meals using raw ingredients and various cooking techniques for up to 51 women and children.
The Facilities
Cook works Monday to Friday and is responsible for preparing and portioning meals and other food items in advance to ensure clients have meals available throughout the seven-day week, including weekends. In conjunction with the Facilities Manager, the Facilities Cook is responsible for meal planning, making adjustments when necessary, and accommodating dietary restrictions.
The Facilities Cook will assist with food cost tracking, inventory, and coordinating weekly grocery needs. They are also responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of cooking equipment and work areas and ensuring food is prepared and handled in accordance with Food Safe guidelines. In addition to planning and preparing regular meals, the Facilities Cook is responsible for preparing food for onsite meetings as requested.

Cook may also provide direction and guidance to staff assisting with kitchen duties.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not lmited to:
- Plan, prepare, and portion healthy and nutritious meals for residential clients, ensuring cultural and dietary requirements are accommodated and allergies and food intolerances are respected
- Plan and prepare meals and food items in advance to ensure appropriate meals are available for clients each day of the week
- Develop and adjust meal plans in conjunction with the Facilities Manager based on client needs, dietary requirements, available supplies, and budget
- Coordinate weekly grocery needs and assist with maintaining food costs within the established budget
- Maintain accurate food inventory and communicate when supplies need to be replenished
- Ensure kitchen surfaces, dishes, utensils, appliances, and other food preparation areas are properly cleaned, sanitized, and maintained
- Prepare and handle food in accordance with Food Protected guidelines and other applicable food safety requirements
- Participate in health inspections and address any kitchen or food safety concerns as required
- Prepare clear instructions and organize meals and food items for staff to serve or prepare during evenings and weekends
- Prepare food trays and other food items for onsite meetings and other events as requested
- Communicate effectively with shelter staff regarding meal plans, dietary requirements, food availability, and any other kitchen-related needs
- Ensure consistent communication and support of clients in both the emergency and second stage shelter
- Seek out, inquire, and engage in new opportunities and education in areas where development is necessary
- Accommodate clients wishing to prepare their own meal(s)
Qualifications The successful applicant will possess one or more of the following:
- Grade 12 or GED
- Food Safe Certificate
- WHMIS
- Experience planning and preparing meals for large groups in a professional capacity
- Valid class 5 drivers license and a safe and reliable vehicle
Skills and Abilities The successful applicant will possess the following:
- Exceptional planning and organizational ability
- Good time management skills
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Ability to work independently with minimum supervision
- Self-motivated
- Knowledge of Alberta Health Standards for residential facilities
- Ability to work on your feet for up to 10 hours per day
- Able to lift/carry up to 35lbs
