We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Head of Human Resources to lead all aspects of our human resources function and support the continued success of our Canadian operations.
Position Overview
Reporting directly to the Managing Director, the Head of Human Resources will be responsible for overseeing and managing all human resources activities for Lohmann Breeders Canada Ltd.
As the company's sole HR professional, the successful candidate will take ownership of the entire HR function, balancing strategic planning with the day-to-day administration and operational requirements of the business.
This position requires an individual who is comfortable working independently, providing guidance to senior management, and supporting employees across multiple operating locations.
The ideal candidate will be a proactive, approachable, and solutions-oriented HR professional who understands the importance of balancing employee well-being, legislative compliance, and business objectives.
Key Responsibilities
Human Resources Management & Strategy
- Develop, implement, and maintain HR policies, procedures, and programs that align with the company's operational and strategic objectives.
- Serve as the primary HR advisor to the Managing Director and management team.
- Oversee all aspects of the employee lifecycle, including recruitment, onboarding, performance management, employee development, and separation.
- Provide guidance on organizational structure, workforce planning, and succession planning.
- Identify opportunities to improve HR processes, operational efficiency, and employee engagement.
- Ensure consistent application of company policies and employment practices across all operating locations.
Employee Relations & Employment Compliance
- Act as the primary point of contact for employee relations matters, workplace concerns, and conflict resolution.
- Provide guidance and support to managers regarding employee performance, disciplinary matters, and employment terminations.
- Conduct workplace investigations and ensure employee concerns are addressed promptly, professionally, and confidentially.
- Maintain compliance with applicable employment legislation, including the Ontario Employment Standards Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, and Ontario Human Rights Code.
- Manage workplace accommodation requests, attendance concerns, and return-to-work processes.
- Identify potential employment-related risks and work with management and external advisors to develop appropriate solutions.
Recruitment, Onboarding & Employee Retention
- Manage the full recruitment process for farm, hatchery,
administrative, technical, and management positions.
- Work closely with department managers to identify staffing needs and develop effective recruitment strategies.
- Prepare employment agreements, offer letters, job descriptions, and other employment-related documentation.
- Coordinate employee onboarding, orientation, and integration into the organization.
- Develop initiatives to improve employee retention, engagement, and workforce stability.
- Support the recruitment and employment administration of international workers, where applicable.
Compensation, Benefits & HR Administration
- Oversee employee compensation programs, salary reviews, benefits administration, and group RRSP programs.
- Coordinate with payroll and finance to ensure accurate employee compensation, vacation entitlements, statutory holiday pay, and other employment-related payments.
- Maintain accurate and confidential employee records, personnel files, and HR documentation.
- Administer and maintain the company's Human Resources Management System (HRMS).
- Manage relationships with benefits providers, insurance companies, and external HR service providers.
- Prepare HR reports and provide management with relevant workforce information and recommendations.
Performance Management & Employee Development
- Develop and maintain employee performance evaluation and development programs.
- Support department managers in establishing clear performance expectations and addressing performance concerns.
- Identify employee training requirements and coordinate appropriate training and development initiatives.
- Assist management in developing leadership skills and improving employee communication.
- Promote a workplace culture that emphasizes accountability, professionalism, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
Health, Safety & Workplace Culture
- Work collaboratively with management to support a safe, respectful, and compliant working environment.
- Assist with workplace injury management, WSIB claims, and employee return-to-work programs.
- Support the implementation and administration of workplace health and safety policies and training.
- Promote effective communication between employees, supervisors, and senior management.
- Maintain a regular presence at company operating locations to build relationships and understand the needs of employees and management.
Qualifications & Experience
- Post-secondary education in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related discipline.
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive human resources experience, preferably including responsibility for managing an HR function.
- CHRL or CHRE designation is considered an asset.
- Strong knowledge of Ontario employment legislation, employment standards, human rights, and workplace health and safety requirements.
- Demonstrated experience in employee relations, recruitment,
performance management, compensation, and benefits administration.
- Experience managing workplace investigations, disciplinary matters, and employee terminations.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to independently manage multiple priorities.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills.
- High level of professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Human Resources Management Systems.
- Experience in agriculture, manufacturing, food production, or a similar operational environment is considered an asset.
- Valid driver's licence and ability to travel between company operating locations as required.

The successful candidate will be someone who can develop long-term HR strategies while remaining actively involved in recruitment, employee relations, administration, and daily operational matters.
You will be expected to build strong relationships with employees and managers, provide practical solutions to workplace challenges, and maintain a consistent and skilled approach to human resources management.
You should be comfortable working in a dynamic agricultural environment where operational priorities can change quickly and effective communication, sound judgment, and timely decision-making are essential.
