Job Overview

The HIM instructor is responsible for delivering high-quality instruction to students enrolled in the Health Information Management program. The role involves planning and implementing course content, guiding students through their theoretical and practical learning experiences, and preparing them for careers in Health Information Management. The teacher will create an engaging, inclusive, and supportive learning environment that fosters student development and aligns with program goals and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities

1. Course Delivery

- Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging lessons aligned with the approved HIM curriculum and current industry best practices.
- Facilitate synchronous and asynchronous learning using a variety of instructional methods that support diverse adult learners.
- Integrate theoretical knowledge with practical application through case studies, simulations, role plays, group activities, and reflective learning.
- Deliver instruction using trauma-informed, recovery-oriented, culturally safe, anti-oppressive, and strengths-based approaches.
- Incorporate current legislation, evidence-based practices, and emerging trends in mental health and addictions into classroom instruction.

2. Student Assessment and Support

- Evaluate student learning through assignments, quizzes, presentations, simulations, practical evaluations, and examinations.
- Provide timely, constructive,



and individualized feedback to support academic achievement and professional development.
- Monitor student progress and identify learners requiring additional academic or personal support.
- Encourage critical thinking, reflective practice, ethical decision-making, and professional accountability.
- Manage the LMS associated with the course.

3. Practical Skills Development

- Facilitate skill development through applied learning activities, counselling simulations, motivational interviewing practice, case management exercises, crisis intervention scenarios, and group facilitation activities.
- Prepare students for field placement by reinforcing professional expectations, workplace ethics, documentation standards, communication skills, and client-centred practice.
- Reinforce workplace safety standards, infection prevention practices, WHMIS requirements, and quality assurance procedures.
- Where assigned, support students during field placement through mentoring, site visits, communication with placement supervisors, and evaluation of student performance.
- Participate in practicum monitoring, site visits, student evaluations, and communication with placement partners as assigned.

4. Curriculum and Program Development

- Participate in curriculum review and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Recommend updates to course materials to reflect changes in pharmacy practice, legislation, technology, and industry standards.
- Support program accreditation, regulatory compliance, and quality assurance initiatives as required.
- Participate in faculty meetings, career development activities, and institutional committees.

5. Classroom Management

- Foster an inclusive, respectful, and supportive learning environment.
- Encourage critical thinking, professional judgment, teamwork, and effective communication.
- Serve as a positive professional role model for future HIM workers.
- Maintain regular communication with students regarding course expectations, academic progress, and available support services.

Qualifications

- Diploma, advanced diploma, degree,



or other recognized postsecondary credential in Health Information Management, Health Informatics, Health Information Science, Health Administration, or a closely related discipline.
- CHIM (Certified Health Information Management) designation is strongly preferred.
- Minimum 2 years of recent, relevant professional experience in health information management, health records, coding/classification, health information systems, privacy, data quality, or a related healthcare information environment.
- Previous teaching, training, or facilitation experience with adult/postsecondary learners is preferred.
- Experience with Canadian healthcare information practices, privacy requirements, electronic health records, and health information systems is preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

- Postsecondary teaching experience or experience facilitating adult education.
- Experience with ICD-10-CA/CCI and Canadian health information classification/coding practices would be highly desirable
- Experience in curriculum development, instructional design, or online teaching.
- Experience with online/synchronous teaching and Canvas or another LMS would also be valuable

Working Conditions:

- Part-time position, with potential evening or weekend classes based on program schedules.
- Ability to conduct site visits to placement locations as needed.
