Qualifications

MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:
- Bachelor degree required (preferably In Indigenous Studies or Fine Arts) is required.
EXPERIENCE:
- One year of directly related administrative experience is required.
- At least four years' experience working with youth, art students, adults or large groups in an educational or gallery setting is required.
- Demonstrated ability to be a self-starter, able to handle multiple tasks is required.
- Demonstrated successful leadership skills in Indigenous communities, post-secondary, or other Indigenous non-profit organizational environments is required.
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Proven record of successful work with Indigenous communities and understanding of Indigenous cultures, protocols, and community-based partnerships is required.
- Ability to work effectively and respectfully with Elders/Knowledge Keepers, Indigenous community members, and University leadership is required.
- Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with artists, community partners, and other cultural organizations is required.
- Proven ability to engage new audiences and develop meaningful connections within the local arts and cultural community is required.
- Strong interest in art, design and craft, demonstrated understanding of the educational value of same is required.
- Experience in designing and delivering engaging, accessible learning programs, workshops, tours, talks, and public programming for diverse audiences is required.
- Must be comfortable working with a small team.
- Must exercise discretion and confidentiality.
- Organizational and planning skills are required.
- Demonstrated ability to take a project from idea to completion is required.
- Friendly and accepting attitude to all visitors is required.
- Excellent speaking and writing skills are required.
- Valuable technical and computer skills are required.
- Satisfactory work record,
including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.

Key responsibilities
Education and Public Programming
- Develop, coordinate, and deliver educational and public programs that complement the Gallery’s exhibitions and permanent collection, including but not limited to Indigenous programming initiatives;
- Develop and facilitate guided tours, workshops, artist and curator talks, discussions, and other learning activities for schools, University classes, community organizations, and the general public;
- Develop culturally responsive and accessible approaches to learning and interpretation for audiences with diverse backgrounds, ages, experiences, and levels of familiarity with contemporary art;
- Identify and coordinate artists, educators, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and other program participants for workshops, talks, and educational activities, in accordance with University procedures;
- Contribute information and program documentation required for grant applications, reports, budgets, and other Gallery planning activities.
Community Engagement and Outreach
- Strengthen and sustain existing relationships, and build new connections with schools, Indigenous communities and organizations, arts and cultural organizations, community groups, and other program partners;
- Strengthen and sustain existing relationships, and build new connections with Indigenous artists, educators, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, cultural workers, and community partners to inform Gallery programming and engagement;
- Plan, coordinate, and deliver outreach programs and activities with schools, Indigenous organizations, arts organizations, and other community partners;
- Maintain knowledge of relevant cultural protocols and work in consultation with Indigenous artists, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community partners to ensure protocols are respected in Gallery programs and activities;
- Work collaboratively with the Office of the Vice-President (Indigenous), Indigenous student services, and other relevant University units to support Indigenous engagement, learning, and reconciliation initiatives;
Indigenous Collections Support
- Conduct and support research relating to Indigenous artists and artworks represented in the Gallery’s permanent collection;
- Support the development of educational and interpretive resources relating to Indigenous artworks in the permanent collection;
- Work with the Director/Curator and collections staff to identify cultural protocols and considerations relevant to the interpretation, care, access, reproduction, documentation, and display of Indigenous artworks;
- Support consultation with artists, communities, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and other appropriate sources when additional cultural or contextual knowledge is required;
- Contribute research and information concerning potential acquisitions of Indigenous artworks as requested by the Director/Curator;
Other General Gallery Responsibilities
- Welcome artists, speakers, community partners, and program participants and provide operational support during Gallery programs and events;
- Participate in Gallery staff meetings, program planning, and other activities related to the ongoing operation of the Gallery;
- Perform other related duties within the scope of the position as assigned to support Gallery operations.
- Other duties as assigned.
