WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

ACSA Newcomer and Settlement Department is looking to hire a Language Program Specialist (Casual) who has demonstrated experience in teaching English language to newcomers to help them achieve English language fluency to improve their daily social interactions as well as acquire their language certificate to apply for Citizenship.

ABOUT THE ROLE:

1. Instruction & Curriculum Delivery

· Plan and deliver learner-centered, CLB-aligned instruction across language competencies (listening, speaking, reading, and writing);

· Develop structured lesson plans that integrate settlement themes, workplace language, life skills, Indigenous education, GBV, etc.;

· Adapt teaching strategies to meet multi-level classroom needs and diverse learning styles;

· Incorporate authentic materials and real-life scenarios relevant to newcomer experiences;

· Utilize technology and online platforms to support blended or remote learning where applicable.

2. Learner Support & Classroom Environment

· Foster a safe, inclusive, and culturally responsive classroom environment.

· Promote learner engagement, confidence, and participation.

· Support students in understanding Canadian systems, workplace culture, and community resources.

· Conduct one-on-one or smaller group support for clients as needed;





· Refer learners to appropriate settlement or community services when necessary.

· Address classroom challenges with professionalism and sensitivity.

3. Assessment & Evaluation

· Conduct initial language assessments using CLB standards;

· Monitor learner progress through formative, summative assessments and keeping track of their development in achieving their learning goals;

· Provide timely, constructive feedback to support learner improvement;

· Prepare progress reports and maintain accurate learner portfolios;

· Identify learners requiring additional support and develop improvement strategies.

4. Administrative and Compliance Tasks

· Ensure program compliance with funding requirements, including reporting and adherence to LINC standards such as PLBA requirements;

· Monitor development of student learners by tracking their progress in a form of language portfolio (PBLA);

· Prepare materials, lesson plans and activities for each level or group;

· Create and update all required reports including monthly progress reports.

ABOUT YOU

· Graduate of a University degree or College Diploma in Communication, Education or other related studies; TESL Certificate (OCELT Certified) is mandatory; PBLA certification is an asset;

· Over 2-3+ years experience teaching English as a Second Language (preference will be given to LINC experience);

· Expertise in adult education, a strong understanding of the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB), and experience working with diverse populations;

· Familiarity with preparing and using PBLA is an asset;

· Demonstrated ability to effectively analyze, synthesize and disseminate pedagogical information;

· Proven leadership skills with strong team work experience;

· Conflict resolution skills,



highly organized, tactful, flexible and enthusiastic;

· Good working knowledge of standard office equipment and software applications;

· Knowledge of ICARE, HARTS, OCMS applications is an asset;

· Good working knowledge of Avenue, ELII, and other software applications is an asset;

· Excellent teaching and communication skills (verbal and written) and adult education;

· Must have excellent working knowledge of language acquisition, Canadian Language Benchmarks, and newcomer settlement issues;

· Extensive experience working with diverse population in a classroom setting;

· Ability to speak another language is an asset (please specify languages you can speak and write);

· Ability to work both independently and as part of a team with minimal supervision;

· Excellent time management skills;

· Extensive knowledge and experience in teaching program logistics and curriculum planning.
