Career Development Position: Pathway to Automotive Service Technician Apprentice

Position Summary

We are seeking a motivated and dependable Automotive Lube Technician who is interested in building a long-term career in the automotive trade.

This is more than an entry-level maintenance position. It is intended to provide the successful candidate with the foundational skills, work habits, shop experience, and technical development necessary to potentially advance into an Automotive Service Technician Apprentice role.

The Lube Technician will begin by becoming proficient in routine vehicle maintenance, inspections, tire service, shop procedures, safety practices, and repair-order documentation. As competency is demonstrated, the employee may gradually be exposed to additional mechanical work and opportunities to assist experienced technicians.

Advancement into an apprenticeship position is earned through demonstrated performance, reliability, technical aptitude, safe working practices, and a consistent commitment to learning.

Key Responsibilities

Vehicle Maintenance

- Perform engine oil and filter changes according to manufacturer specifications.
- Perform multi-point vehicle inspections.
- Check and adjust tire pressures.
- Rotate, remove, install, and balance tires as trained and authorized.
- Assist with seasonal tire changeovers.
- Check and top up vehicle fluids as required.
- Inspect fluid condition and identify potential maintenance concerns.
- Replace wiper blades, bulbs, batteries, filters, and other basic maintenance components.
- Perform other preventative maintenance services within the employee's level of training and authorization.
- Complete thorough visual inspections of vehicles.
- Identify and report visible concerns involving tires, brakes, steering, suspension, leaks, fluids, and other vehicle components.
- Accurately document inspection results and work performed.
- Notify the appropriate technician, foreman, or service advisor when additional concerns are identified.
- Ensure work is completed correctly before the vehicle leaves the service bay.
- Take responsibility for the quality of completed work.

Shop & Safety Responsibilities

- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Properly use and care for tools and shop equipment.
- Follow all workplace safety procedures and required PPE practices.
- Maintain cleanliness of customer vehicles while performing service work.
- Assist with general shop organization when required.
- Immediately report unsafe conditions, damaged equipment,



or workplace incidents.

A major expectation of this position is continued technical development.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

- Demonstrate a genuine interest in becoming an Automotive Service Technician.
- Learn proper tool identification, use, care, and organization.
- Develop a basic understanding of vehicle systems and components.
- Ask questions and actively learn from Journeyperson/Journeyman Technicians and shop leadership.
- Assist technicians with repairs when assigned.
- Gradually take on more technically challenging work as skills develop.
- Develop effective diagnostic and problem-solving habits.
- Learn how to read and follow manufacturer service information and repair procedures.
- Participate in available manufacturer, dealership, and workplace training.
- Accept coaching and demonstrate improvement following feedback.
- Build the skills and professional habits necessary to successfully transition into an apprenticeship position.

Pathway to Apprenticeship

The Lube Technician position should be viewed as the first stage of an automotive career development pathway, not an automatic guarantee of apprenticeship.

Required

Considered an Asset

- Previous automotive, tire, lube, mechanical, or shop experience.
- Automotive education or pre-employment training.
- Previous experience using automotive hand and power tools.

Previous automotive experience does not need to be the deciding factor. Your current Lube Technician description specifically identifies experience as an asset rather than an absolute requirement.
