Job Overview:
United Chargers Inc. is Canada's leading independent manufacturer of Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE), most notably known for our rugged, reliable, and affordable Grizzl-E home and commercial EV charging stations.
We are seeking a skilled and practical Mechanical Design Engineer to join our engineering and production team at our facility in Richmond Hill. In this hands-on technical role, you will lead the transformation of conceptual engineering designs into highly precise 3D CAD parametric models and production-ready 2D manufacturing drawings. Your designs will directly impact the durability of hardware engineered to withstand the harshest environmental conditions.
Key Responsibilities:
3D Modeling & 2D Drafting
- Develop complex 3D models and assemblies of EV charging enclosures, heavy-duty mounting hardware, cable management systems, and internal structural brackets.
- Utilize an agile toolset spanning parametric CAD, mesh modeling, and open-source design software to quickly iterate from raw concepts to finalized engineering files.
- Generate precise 2D technical drawings for local and global production, ensuring high-quality dimensioning and annotations.
- Apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T;) to guarantee seamless fit-up and strict adherence to NEMA Type 4 and UL weather-proofing enclosure standards.
- Perform detailed tolerance stack-up analyses for mechanical sub-assemblies to prevent assembly friction on the production floor.
Design for Manufacturing (DFM) & Lifecycle Support
- Incorporate rigid DFM and DFA principles, prioritizing sheet metal fabrication, heavy-duty plastic injection molding, and cast aluminum processes.
- Manage and generate Bills of Materials (BOMs)
and technical documentation for procurement, helping maintain lean operational efficiency.
- Handle Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) by updating existing models and drawings based on real-world testing, field feedback, or production line adjustments.
- Organize, upload, and track revision history within the company's document and PDM/PLM data management systems.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work hand-in-hand with our electronics and firmware engineers to integrate internal PCBs, connectors, and smart Wi-Fi modules smoothly into outer shells.
- Collaborate closely with production staff to resolve quality variances, error-proof assembly layouts, and optimize overall cycle times.
Qualifications & Skills:
Education & Experience
- Deep proficiency in parametric modeling tools like SolidWorks or equivalent (e.g., Autodesk Inventor).
- Strong working familiarity with up-to-date and flexible design tools including Shapr3D (for rapid iPad/desktop prototyping) and Blender (for advanced surface modeling, mesh manipulation, or concept renderings).
- Strong capabilities in SolidWorks or equivalent software for creating clear, production-ready fabrication layouts and legacy drawing updates.
- Openness to utilizing and integrating open-source design/engineering tools within the development workflow.
- Intimate familiarity with sheet metal stamp/bend tolerances, plastic enclosure design, sealing/gasketing for waterproofing, and thermal dissipation.
- Practical comprehension of ASME/ISO drafting principles, and awareness of UL/CSA safety standard enclosures.
Soft Skills
- A lean-engineering, problem-solving mindset that favors functional durability over complex aesthetic bloat.
- Outstanding visual attention to detail and zero-error documentation discipline.
- Strong verbal communication to smoothly coordinate between engineering, procurement, and the electronics assembly floor.
Benefits
- On-site parking
- Work Location: In person
