1. Position Summary The Part-Time Custodial Assistant supports the cleanliness, safety, and orderly operation of the Centre when the regular Custodian is not on site. The position is responsible for completing routine cleaning and basic facility-maintenance duties, preparing rooms for programs and activities, and responding to reasonable custodial needs that arise during scheduled shifts.
The Custodial Assistant is an important member of the Centre’s support team and is expected to work independently, use good judgment, and maintain a welcoming, clean, and safe environment for older adults, staff, volunteers, instructors, and visitors.
The position does not replace the responsibilities of the regular Custodian. Significant maintenance problems, safety concerns, equipment failures, or issues beyond routine custodial duties must be reported promptly to the Executive Director.
2. Key Responsibilities
A. Cleaning & Sanitation
- Perform routine cleaning of the Centre when the regular Custodian is not on site.
- Clean and sanitize washrooms, including toilets, sinks, mirrors, floors, and high-touch surfaces.
- Sweep, vacuum, mop, and spot-clean floors as required.
- Dust and clean furniture, tables, counters, fixtures, and other surfaces.
- Empty garbage and recycling containers and replace liners.
- Clean kitchen and refreshment areas following Centre procedures.
- Clean spills and other minor messes promptly to reduce slip and fall hazards.
- Maintain adequate supplies of toilet paper, paper towels, soap, and other routine custodial supplies.
- Follow appropriate cleaning, sanitation, and infection-prevention procedures.
B. Program & Room Preparation
- Assist with preparing rooms and activity areas for scheduled programs, meetings, contracts, and events.
- Return tables, chairs, and other movable furniture to their appropriate locations after activities.
- Ensure program spaces are clean, tidy, and ready for the next users.
- Perform additional light cleaning following larger programs or events, as directed.
C. Safety & Facility Monitoring
- Maintain clean and unobstructed walkways, entrances, and common areas.
- Identify and promptly report hazards such as spills,
damaged flooring, leaks, broken fixtures, or unsafe conditions.
- Report unusual or potentially serious maintenance problems to the Executive Director.
- Follow the Centre’s workplace health and safety policies and procedures.
- Use cleaning products, equipment, and supplies safely and according to instructions.
- Keep cleaning supplies and equipment secured and stored appropriately.
D. Communication & Reporting
- Communicate regularly with the Executive Director regarding cleaning needs, supply requirements, and facility concerns.
- Record or report significant issues identified during shifts.
- Advise when supplies are running low or equipment requires attention.
- Complete assigned duties reliably and within the scheduled shift.
E. Other Duties
- Assist with occasional additional custodial tasks that are reasonable and appropriate to the position.
- Support the Centre’s efforts to provide a clean, safe, accessible, and welcoming setting.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
- Provide day-time coverage for lead Custodian for sick days and/or scheduled holidays.
3. Qualifications & Skills
Required
- Ability to work independently with little to no supervision.
- Reliable attendance and punctuality.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
- Good organizational skills and attention to cleanliness and detail.
- Ability to communicate respectfully with older adults, staff, volunteers, instructors, and visitors.
- Ability to recognize and report safety hazards and maintenance concerns.
- Ability to safely perform the physical requirements of routine custodial work.
Considered an Asset
- Experience working in a community centre, seniors’ facility, recreation centre, office, or other public facility.
- Previous cleaning, custodial, housekeeping, or related experience is an asset.
- Knowledge of safe cleaning practices and appropriate use of cleaning products.
- WHMIS training.
- Basic knowledge of workplace health and safety practices.
- First Aid/CPR certification.

Physical Requirements The position involves routine physical activities associated with custodial work, including:
- Standing and walking for extended periods.
- Bending, reaching, stretching, and kneeling.
- Lifting and carrying routine cleaning supplies and equipment.
- Pushing and pulling cleaning equipment.
- Moving tables, chairs, and other furniture when required (lifting up to 50 LBS)
- Performing repetitive cleaning activities.
5. Working Conditions
- Work takes place primarily indoors in a community seniors’ recreation facility.
- The employee will work independently as the lead Custodian is not on site.
- The Centre is used by older adults, volunteers, staff, instructors, and members of the public.
- The employee may occasionally encounter spills, waste, dust, cleaning products, and other conditions normally associated with custodial work. This may include bodily fluids.

6. Supervision & Authority The Part-Time Custodial Assistant reports exclusively to the Executive Director. The employee is expected to exercise reasonable judgment but is not authorized to undertake major repairs, electrical work, plumbing repairs, hazardous-material handling, or other work outside the scope of routine custodial duties unless specifically authorized and appropriately qualified.
When an issue presents a potential safety risk or requires specialized maintenance, the employee should secure the area where reasonably possible and promptly notify the Executive Director.
7. Confidentiality & Conduct The Custodial Assistant is expected to:
- Maintain confidentiality concerning information encountered while working at the Centre.
- Treat members, visitors, volunteers, staff, and instructors with dignity and respect.
- Maintain appropriate professional boundaries.
- Follow all applicable Centre policies, including workplace health and safety, accessibility, harassment, violence prevention, and privacy policies.
- Contribute to a welcoming and respectful environment for older adults and all Centre users.
8. General Statement This describes the principal duties and responsibilities of the Part-Time Custodial Assistant. It is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties that may be required. Duties may be adjusted from time to time to meet the operational needs of the Centre.
