Company Description NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada) is a federal agency that invests over $1 billion annually in natural sciences and engineering research across Canada. Its funding supports more than 11,000 professors and leading researchers, enabling world-class discoveries and innovations. NSERC also builds partnerships between researchers and industry to inform R&D;, address scale-up challenges, and reduce the risks of commercializing high-potential technologies.

In addition, NSERC provides scholarships and hands-on training to over 30,000 post-secondary students and post-doctoral fellows, helping to develop the next generation of science and engineering leaders in Canada.

Role Description The President is a full-time on-site role based in Ottawa, ON, responsible for providing strategic leadership and overall direction for NSERC. The incumbent will oversee the development and implementation of national research funding strategies, programs, and policies in alignment with governmental priorities and NSERC’s mandate. Day-to-day responsibilities include engaging with federal and provincial stakeholders, academic institutions, industry partners, and the research community to advance NSERC’s mission and foster collaborative initiatives.

The President will guide organizational performance, ensure transparent and accountable stewardship of public funds, and champion equity, diversity, and inclusion across NSERC’s programs. The role also includes representing NSERC publicly, communicating its impact,



and supporting a high-performing executive team and workforce.

Qualifications

- Demonstrated executive leadership experience in large, complex organizations, preferably in government, research, higher education, or related sectors.

- Proven ability to develop and implement strategic plans, policies, and programs that advance organizational mandates and public objectives.

- Strong stakeholder engagement skills, including collaboration with government bodies, academic institutions, industry, and community partners.

- Experience in research, innovation, or science and engineering ecosystems, with an understanding of funding frameworks and research policy.

- Excellent communication skills, including public speaking, media engagement, and the ability to convey complex issues to diverse audiences.

- Commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility, with experience integrating these principles into organizational practices.

- Proven financial and risk management skills, including oversight of significant budgets and ensuring accountability and compliance.

- Solid governance experience, working effectively with boards, advisory councils, or similar oversight bodies.

- Advanced degree in a relevant field (e.g., science, engineering, public administration, policy, business) or equivalent combination of education and senior leadership experience.

- High level of integrity, sound judgment, and the ability to make decisions in a transparent and evidence-informed manner.
