In the Black Bookkeeping Services

Canada

About us In The Black Bookkeeping Services Ltd. has been a trusted partner in financial management for over 13 years, serving businesses in the North BX area of Vernon, BC and across the province. Our team works remotely on cloud-based systems and is built around a clear junior/senior structure: juniors post, seniors own the file. The owner is stepping back from day-to-day file work to focus on the firm, and this role takes over the senior seat on our largest client files; she remains the final reviewer on every file.

The role

You own client files end to end and you are the senior reviewer on files posted by juniors. Juniors do the daily posting and bank and credit card reconciliations; you review their work, close the month, prepare the working papers, handle every filing, and are the day-to-day contact for the client and the accountant. On catch-up engagements you carry the file yourself from the first statement to the year-end package.

You will take over the senior seat on several of our largest files. You prepare every month-end and year-end package on your files and bring each one to the owner complete. The owner's role is final review only: she signs off, hands the year-end to the accountant, and holds the reporting meeting with the client.

Her name is on the work, so it goes to her complete.

This is a month-end job before it is anything else. Our standard is that every month-end is closed to year-end quality: prepaids, deferrals, accruals, loan amortization and every balance sheet account reconciled and supported, every month, so the year-end is simply the twelfth close. If you close on a cash-adjusted basis and leave accruals for year-end, this is not the right fit.

If you accrue wages for pay periods that straddle a month-end without being asked, set up prepaids and deferrals on the day the invoice arrives, amortize loans monthly, and produce a year-end file the accountant doesn't need to call about, keep reading.

What you'll do

- Close month-ends on a portfolio of client files to year-end quality: accruals, prepaids, deferrals, loan amortization, every balance sheet account reconciled and supported, and a working-paper package ready for the owner's final review
- Analyze the P&L; every month: review each account for misposts, missing recurring items and unusual variances against prior months, and correct or flag before the package goes out
- Review a junior's daily posting and reconciliations on your files and coach them to the firm standard
- Process payroll from simple to complex: multiple earnings codes, taxable benefits, vehicle allowances and standby charges, ROEs, and year-end T4 reconciliation to the ledger
- Own every government deadline on your files: GST/PST, WCB, EHT, source deductions and corporate tax instalments are filed and paid on time,

every time
- Set the timing structure on each client file, from posting cut-offs through reconciliation, review and month-end delivery, and hold the junior on the file to it
- Prepare year-end packages, for the owner's final review before hand-off to the accountant, that leave the accountant very little to do, plus T4, T4A and T5018 filings
- Run difficult, sometimes messy catch-up engagements: establish opening balances from filed returns, rebuild from source, flag what cannot be documented
- Set up and maintain Dext rules and QuickBooks Online bank rules to make files efficient
- Communicate directly with clients and accountants on day-to-day matters in plain language, within 24 hours; the owner leads the client's reporting meetings
- Some day-to-day posting when a file calls for it, such as during a catch-up, a junior's absence, or on a file you carry alone
- Some administrative tasks tied to the client file, such as CRA and eTaxBC account access, supplier and bank correspondence, and keeping the client's records in Financial Cents and SharePoint current
- Track your time by task and meet every internal and external deadline

What we're looking for
- 7+ years of full-cycle bookkeeping, at least 3 of them in public practice, a multi-client bookkeeping firm, or as a full-charge bookkeeper producing monthly management statements
- A monthly close you can describe step by step, including how you handle accruals and reversals. If your files are only closed at year-end, this is not the role
- Experience reviewing other people's bookkeeping and correcting it constructively
- Catch-up experience: files a year or more behind that you rebuilt from source and brought to a year-end package
- All modules of QuickBooks Online, plus Dext, SharePoint and a practice workflow tool such as Financial Cents; working knowledge of Sage 50
- Experience with Sage 300 or AccountEdge is an asset
- BC payroll from basic to complex (earnings codes, taxable advantages, vehicle allowances) and compliance: GST, PST, WorkSafeBC, EHT, source deductions, T4/T4A/T5018
- Extremely detail-oriented, deadline-driven, and self-directed in a remote setting with a dedicated home office in BC
- CPB designation, a CPA in progress, or an accounting diploma or degree are assets

How we hire A 60-minute video interview, then a paid remote working interview of 4 to 5 hours.

It is a case scenario in QuickBooks Online with Dext: a fictional corporation several months behind, with payroll, sales tax and a full balance sheet. You bring the file current, close each month, and leave the working papers you would hand up for final review. We look at what you accrue, what you build and what you flag, not just what you finish. Two work references at business email addresses are checked before an offer.

What we offer

- Remote work from anywhere in British Columbia; company-supplied laptop
- Extended health, dental, LTD, critical illness, EAP and telemedicine after the three-month probationary period (firm pays 60% of premiums)
- Vacation pay paid on every cheque; paid sick days per BC Employment Standards
- Structured onboarding, including Dext certification and client-specific training
- A firm where the senior role has real ownership of the file

Before you apply
- Do not apply if you do not live in British Columbia. Only BC residents will be considered.
- You must be available during normal business hours, Monday to Friday. This is not evening or weekend work
- Please do not apply if you cannot commit to a minimum of 30 hours per week

How to apply

Apply through Indeed with your resume and a short cover letter. In the cover letter, tell us about one month-end you closed on a file that was behind, and what you accrued.

We thank all applicants for their interest; only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
