Coextro is a growing Canadian Internet Service Provider seeking an experienced, hands-on Senior Network & Systems Engineer to take technical ownership of our network infrastructure and related systems.
This is not a narrowly defined corporate networking position supported by several specialized departments. We are a small, fast-moving ISP, and the successful candidate will be expected to personally investigate problems, configure equipment, build and improve systems, lead technical projects, and create the documentation and operational processes needed to support our continued growth.
We are looking for someone with strong practical networking and systems experience who can begin contributing with limited technical supervision. You must be comfortable working in an environment where not every system is fully documented, not every process has been formalized, and determining how something currently works may be the first step toward improving it.
This position provides significant autonomy and the opportunity to make a visible impact. You will become our senior internal technical resource for network operations, system builds, infrastructure improvements, and complex escalations. You will also provide technical guidance to our Technical Support and Field Services teams, but this remains a highly hands-on engineering position—not solely a management or delegation role.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and improve our core and distribution networks and related systems.
- Take ownership of complex technical issues and carry them through investigation, resolution, and documentation.
- Configure routers, switches, firewalls, servers, monitoring platforms, and other network infrastructure.
- Lead system builds, network upgrades, migrations, deployments, and infrastructure improvement projects.
- Identify weaknesses and opportunities to improve network stability, performance, visibility, security, and operating costs.
- Independently assess existing systems, including inherited or incompletely documented configurations.
- Develop and maintain network diagrams, configuration records, operating procedures, technical standards, and troubleshooting documentation.
- Create practical and repeatable processes for network operations, deployments, maintenance, and incident response.
- Serve as the senior escalation point for network outages, service issues, installations, technical support issues, and deployment challenges.
- Serve as the primary on-call technical resource for network outages and other service-affecting infrastructure issues.
- Respond to network outages at our downtown Toronto data centre and at distribution network locations within the condominium buildings we service throughout the Greater Toronto Area.
- Attend network sites outside regular business hours when an issue cannot be resolved remotely.
- Provide on-site escalation support for serious or complex customer-location issues when Field Services personnel require senior technical assistance.
- This position does not normally perform routine customer installations but may assist with difficult installation or service issues when required.
- Monitor infrastructure alerts and respond to urgent service-affecting issues outside regular business hours when required.
- Review and audit network operations and technical support tickets to ensure issues are handled appropriately and within acceptable timelines.
- Plan and manage technical projects, priorities, maintenance activities, and outstanding work.
- Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and training to Technical Support and Field Services personnel.
- Assist Field Services personnel with complex installations, troubleshooting, and deployment issues.
- Inspect network installations and configurations to ensure they meet company standards.
- Train technicians and support staff on new equipment, systems, and procedures.
- Oversee networking equipment inventory and help ensure appropriate spare equipment is available.
- Communicate clearly with management regarding incidents, risks, priorities, project progress, and unresolved issues.
- Remain available by phone, email, and messaging platforms when operational support or escalation is reasonably required.
What Success Looks Like
- You take ownership of technical problems without needing every step assigned or explained.
- You are comfortable working independently as the senior hands-on technical resource.
- You can understand unfamiliar systems and configurations through investigation and practical troubleshooting.
- You identify and address problems before they become major service-affecting incidents.
- You personally complete configurations, upgrades, troubleshooting, and system builds when required.
- You create useful documentation and repeatable processes instead of relying solely on informal knowledge.
- You balance immediate operational needs with longer-term network and system improvements.
- You communicate clearly, follow through on commitments, and keep management informed.
- You leave the network and its supporting systems more stable, organized, visible, and maintainable than you found them.
Required Qualifications
- Significant hands-on experience operating and supporting ISP, telecommunications, carrier, or service-provider networks.
- Strong understanding of routing, switching, BGP, IP addressing, VLANs, firewalls, DHCP, DNS, network monitoring, and general service-provider infrastructure.
- Experience configuring and troubleshooting Cisco routers and switches.
- Experience with Cisco ASR 1000 Series routers or comparable service-provider routing platforms.
- Robust Linux administration experience.
- Practical experience with FreeRADIUS or another RADIUS/AAA platform.
- Experience configuring and troubleshooting BGP in a production environment.
- Experience using network monitoring and alerting platforms such as Zabbix, PRTG, or similar systems.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently in a senior, hands-on network or systems role.
- Experience creating technical documentation, operating procedures, standards, and network diagrams.
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, organizational, and prioritization skills.
- Ability to manage multiple operational issues and projects without losing track of follow-up work.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability and willingness to respond to urgent after-hours issues when required.
- Valid Ontario Class G driver’s licence and the ability to attend network and customer locations throughout the Greater Toronto Area as required.
- Ability to work full-time from our Mississauga office. This is not a remote position.
Preferred Technical Experience Experience with several of the following would be considered an asset. We do not expect every qualified applicant to have worked with every platform listed:
- Cisco Catalyst, Small Business, and Nexus switches
- Cisco ASR 1000 and ASR 9000 Series routers
- PPPoE, L2TP, subscriber management, and ISP access networks
- FreeRADIUS and subscriber authentication systems
- ISC DHCP Server
- Linux, Windows Server, and FreeBSD
- Zabbix and PRTG
- Sandvine ActiveLogic
- Juniper NetScreen firewalls
- 3CX, Asterisk, and FreePBX
- Ubiquiti EdgeRouters, switches, and Wi-Fi systems
- VoIP and SIP infrastructure
- Fibre, Ethernet, and fixed-access network deployments
The Person We Are Looking For You may be a strong fit if you are naturally curious, technically resourceful, and motivated by having real ownership over an environment. You should enjoy finding the cause of difficult problems, improving systems that are not yet perfect, and building the processes and documentation that make future operations easier.
This role is best suited to someone who wants broad technical responsibility and the ability to influence how a growing ISP operates. It is not intended for someone looking for a narrowly defined position where responsibilities are limited to following established procedures or escalating problems to another engineering department.
