Responsibilities

Note that the hours of work for this role vary depending on the time of year:

- 0 - 24 hours/week during the academic year
- 0 - 35 hours/week during the summer break

Reporting primarily to the Platt's Lane Estates Maintenance Coordinator, the Student Facilities Assistant will:
- Support a clean and sustainable community by monitoring garbage and recycling depots, tidying shared outdoor areas, and ensuring items are appropriately disposed of
- Assist with unit transitions by helping remove abandoned items (e.g., mattresses, appliances) and supporting pre-move-in and move-out inspections to confirm unit readiness
- Contribute to tenant safety by testing and replacing batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
- Deliver critical communications and amenities to apartments and townhouses, including notices, small furniture replacements, drapery, window screens, or space heaters as needed
- Perform light maintenance and repairs, such as re-securing sliding doors, installing bathroom fixtures, and replacing window screens




- Monitor inventory levels of maintenance supplies stored on site, providing lists of items requiring replenishment to Maintenance Coordinator
- Help educate tenants on basic apartment living practices, maintenance requests, and community expectations
Support community life by assisting with event setup, appliance deliveries, fire alarm testing, and other operational or engagement initiatives led by the Community Development Coordinator or Rental Office team

- Additionally, the Student Facilities Assistant may provide assistance to Western Apartments by:
- Delivering official notices and communications to University Apartment tenants in a timely and professional manner
- Assisting with pre–move-in and move-out inspections to ensure units are ready for occupancy and to accurately document unit condition
- Supporting tenant education by helping to inform residents about basic apartment living protocols, maintenance procedures, and community standards
- Assisting the Community Development Coordinator with community events and programs, including event setup, teardown, and on-site support to ensure successful tenant engagement activities
- Supporting the coordination and facilitation of operational activities, such as appliance deliveries, fire alarm testing, and other scheduled maintenance or facility projects, ensures that tenants are informed and disruptions are minimized

Qualifications

Education

- Must be a full time student at Western (enrolled in minimum 3.5 courses), and expect to retain full-time student status for the duration of this appointment

Experience::

- Previous experience in a similar role or within the department is preferred

Skills, Abilities & Expertise:

- Physical ability to independently lift refuse (up to 25kg) into garbage bins, remove heavier items with assistance, and climbing up and down stairs




- Self-directed, self-motivated and ability to work independently
- Regularly monitor the grounds without the need for direct supervision
- Uses judgement to organize work and determine when assistance is required to safely remove larger/heavier objects
- Ability to develop positive working relationships by being friendly to co-workers and tenants/occupants of Platt's Lane Estates
- Reliable and dependable with the ability to consistently work assigned schedule
