Job Profile

Reporting to the 4R Depot Foreperson team, the Waste Diversion Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment and vehicles to transport, load, and manage recycling and waste materials at 4R Depots and other related sites.

The position also performs routine inspections and minor servicing, completes required documentation/records, and supports site upkeep and operational continuity, including assisting with training/orientation and carrying out junior classification duties as required.

As The Waste Diversion Equipment Operator , You Will





- Operate assigned heavy equipment and vehicles to move, load, haul, and compact waste and recyclable materials to maintain safe, efficient, and continuous operations at 4R Depots and related sites.
- Maintain depot vehicles, equipment, and work areas in a safe, secure, and operational state by completing regular inspections, coordinating repairs, and performing housekeeping and upkeep activities to support uninterrupted service delivery.
- Complete required inspections and operational documentation to support safe equipment operation, preventive maintenance, and accurate tracking of materials and work completed.
- Perform the full range of duties of the Waste Diversion Site Attendant classification as assigned, to support safe, efficient, and customer-focused depot operations.

Your Education And Qualifications Include

- Grade 10, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Two (2) years' experience operating heavy equipment, such as a roll-off truck, recycling packer truck, and/or skid-steers.

- Experience working with customers and/or contractors in sometimes challenging situations.
- Experience working independently, with minimal supervision.
- Experience organizing and prioritizing tasks in a busy, public-facing work environment.
- Experience maintaining accurate records, such as pre-trip/post-trip inspections, vehicle inspection documentation, and accident/incident reports, as required.
- Experience operating a variety of hand and power tools (e.g., drills, impact wrench) safely and effectively.
- Experience using a personal computer, including Windows and Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to communicate effectively with customers, contractors, and City staff, verbally and in writing, including explaining site procedures and responding to enquiries.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and comply with established work methods, safe work procedures, and site rules.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, external contacts, and the public, consistent with the Respectful Workplace Standard.
- Ability to safely and effectively operate vehicles and equipment within waste diversion operations and around moving traffic, pedestrians, and other equipment.
- Ability to interpret and apply traffic-related legislation and safe traffic control practices relevant to directing vehicles and public traffic in and around a public facility.
- Ability to learn and apply diversion program procedures,



including identifying acceptable/unacceptable materials and applying safe receiving, sorting, handling, and storage practices for diversion and stewardship materials (e.g., used oil, household hazardous waste, and electronic waste).
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions relevant to work and the ability to work in accordance with required operational and safety procedures.
- Ability to carry out the duties of the junior classification (Waste Diversion Site Attendant) as assigned, to support depot operations.

- Must be physically capable of performing the duties of the position and junior classification, including the ability to lift weight up to 50 pounds, work outside for extended periods often under unfavorable weather conditions as required by work assignments, and the ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods and over uneven terrain for extended periods.
