Summary

The Sewer at Keilhauer plays a pivotal role within the Production Department, supporting the manufacturing process through the sewing of fabric and leather components to meet production demands. Key responsibilities include producing high-quality covers, maintaining accuracy and consistency in all sewing activities, and contributing to departmental goals through efficient and timely completion of assigned tasks. This role also requires adherence to safety standards and established production procedures.

The Sewer collaborates with team members within the production cell and across departments to ensure daily schedules are met and product quality standards are maintained. The role is integral in upholding Keilhauer’s reputation for craftsmanship, reliability, and attention to detail.

This position demands a highly focused and dependable individual who can work with precision, follow detailed instructions, and adapt to a fast-paced manufacturing environment. The Sewer demonstrates strong attention to detail, organization, and teamwork, supporting Keilhauer’s commitment to quality and excellence in every product.

Primary Responsibilities

Creates slip covers skillfully and according to instructions





- Sews quality covers as integral part of production process for standard and special orders.
- Align parts, fasteners, and trimmings, following seams, edges, or marking.
- Selects threads and zippers according to specifications or colour of parts.
- Trims excess threads and edges of covers to achieve desired look of quality product.
- Identifies and addresses issues with materials, ensuring quality standards are upheld.
- Manages time and prioritizes tasks to ensure completion of daily production schedule.
- Steams completed chairs when required.
- Assists new/temporary employees with understanding tasks.
- Contributes as a reliable and effective team member within and across cells.
- Sews products within the allotted production standard time.

Qualifications

- Previous experience with machine sewing of one year or more.
- Must have ability to produce detailed, high-quality end products.
- Ability to understand, speak, read and write basic English.

Essential Physical and Intellectual Requirements

- Must be able to repetitively grip tightly and push/pull thick fabrics and leathers with fire retardant backing through a sewing machine.
- Must have full use of both hands and good visual acuity to thread the needle, trim materials, and hold seams open while sewing.
- Must be able to sit for extended periods of time (excluding break periods) while operating a sewing machine.
- Must be able to use a foot treadle, requiring prolonged use of ankle and knee movement.




- Must be able to use tools such as scissors and mallets.
- Works primarily in a plant environment (approximately 100% of the time).
- May be exposed to heat, dust, and noise levels within the manufacturing environment.

Working Conditions

While performing the duties of this job, the employee spends 100% of their time in the production plant environment, where they may be exposed to airborne dust particles and noise. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.

- May be required to work at either Keilhauer location and help with other functional areas as the need arises.
- Must be capable of multi-tasking and able to work with minimal supervision.
- Must be able to wear personal protective equipment, as required (ex. ear plugs, safety shoes).
- Must maintain a sense of urgency under tight deadlines.
- Must be willing to participate in training relevant to the position or industry.
- May occasionally be required to work overtime to meet business needs.
- Follows all company and OSHA Safety regulations; works in a safe manner, reinforces housekeeping and Keilhauer’s core values.
