Job Description
Insight Global's client, a major internet provider, is seeking a Database Developer/Administrator in Canada for a 3 month contract with potential to extend.

The DBA will combine operational expertise and maintain the database systems that power the companies products and platforms.

In this role, you'll own the performance, integrity, and security of MySQL, PostgreSQL, and SQL Server environments, spanning on-premises and cloud-hosted instances.

This is a hands-on individual contributor role that blends traditional DBA responsibilities — backup and recovery, replication, monitoring, capacity planning — with database development work such as schema design, query optimization, and stored procedure development.

The DBA partners closely with software engineering, infrastructure, and data teams to make sure the databases stay reliable, performant, and able to scale as the business grows.

Responsibilities
• Administer, monitor, and tune MySQL, PostgreSQL, and SQL Server instances across production, staging, and development environments.
• Design and implement database schemas, indexes, stored procedures, views, functions, and triggers that support application requirements.
• Own backup, recovery, and disaster recovery strategies, and regularly test restore procedures.
• Configure and maintain high-availability and replication topologies (e.g., MySQL replication/Group Replication, PostgreSQL streaming replication, SQL Server Always On Availability Groups).
• Analyze and optimize slow queries, execution plans, and indexing strategies across multiple database engines.
• Plan and execute database upgrades, migrations, and cross-engine data movement with minimal downtime.




• Implement and maintain database security controls, including access management, encryption, and auditing, in line with compliance requirements.
• Monitor database health and capacity, and proactively identify and resolve performance bottlenecks.
• Automate routine DBA tasks — patching, backups, failover testing, monitoring — using scripting and infrastructure-as-code tools.
• Collaborate with engineering teams on data modeling, query design, and performance considerations during application development.
• Participate in an on-call rotation and lead the technical response to database-related incidents.
• Document database architecture, standards, and runbooks, and mentor other engineers on database best practices.

Skills and Requirements
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 5+ years of skilled experience as a database administrator
• Strong hands-on experience administering and tuning MySQL, PostgreSQL, and Microsoft SQL Server
• Proven experience writing and optimizing complex SQL queries, stored procedures, functions, and triggers across multiple database engines.
• Solid understanding of backup and recovery strategies, replication, and high-availability architectures for relational databases.
• Experience with database security practices, including access control, encryption at rest/in transit, and auditing.
• Familiarity with scripting languages (e.g., Python, Bash, Power

Shell) for automating DBA tasks. • Experience with cloud-managed database services (AWS RDS/Aurora, Azure SQL Database, Google Cloud SQL).
• Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools (Terraform, Ansible) for provisioning and configuring database infrastructure.
• Relevant certifications (e.g., Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, Oracle MySQL certifications, PostgreSQL certifications).
