Overview
We are looking for a Junior Underwriter to join our Personal Lines Team.
Working as part of a team, you will be responsible for the day-to-day underwriting of our personal lines book of business with a focus on our online underwriting portal. This includes processing new business referrals, endorsements, renewals, and cancellations in accordance with company guidelines, with a primary focus on servicing our in-force book and maintaining strong portfolio quality.
As a Junior Underwriter, you will collaborate with the team leader, colleagues, and management to deliver value-added expertise and exceptional service to our broker partners. While new business development plays a supporting role in this position, your core contribution will be ensuring our existing policyholders and broker partners receive accurate, timely, and responsive underwriting service.
This is a hybrid position in our BC (Vancouver, Langley, Salmon Arm)
or ON (Toronto, Oakville) office.
Responsibilities
This position will:
- With training assistance, perform risk analysis using internal and external data resources for the purpose of quoting, negotiating and authorizing the acceptance of risk of a low to moderate complexity;
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with internal and external parties, including attending industry related seminars and networking events as necessary;
- Develop and support professional business partnerships with brokers by providing prompt and professional service, responding to inquiries, acting pro-actively and taking ownership of issues and resolving them with a solution-oriented approach;
- Communicate decisions and respond to requests in a prompt and professional manner;
- Accept, reject, endorse, renew or cancel low to moderate policies following organization’s guidelines and procedures within authority level;
- Handle endorsement requests within delegated authority. Independently engages with broker to clarify intent of endorsement or seek missing information;
- Demonstrate superior attention to detail in reviewing submissions, binders and policy documents to certify accuracy and intent;
- Maintain compliance with established corporate guidelines and delegated authority parameters;
- Determine eligibility for policy renewals based on guidelines and retention goals of the company;
- Keep accurate records of decisions made and maintain completeness of policy data; and
- Junior level of annual production (individually given).
Qualifications
You’re a good fit if you have:
- 1-2 years of experience in the insurance industry.
- Take full ownership of work-related activities; follows through on commitments; maintains confidentiality with sensitive information;
- Ability to work independently to meet deadlines following company guidelines as well as in a team-oriented approach to accomplish goals;
- Deal effectively with pressure, maintains a positive outlook and recover quickly from setbacks;
- Ability to prioritize and complete tasks in order to deliver desired outcomes within allocated time frames;
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal;
- Strong organizational skills and ability to execute as per instructions and guidelines;
- A Chartered Insurance Professional designation (CIP) and/or Canadian Accredited Insurance Broker (CAIB) designations, or are actively pursuing; and
- A broker license or ability to qualify for a license within 90 days.
- Working knowledge of MS Office.

Salary Range
The expected salary range for this position ranges from $45,000 - $50,000 annually and will be impacted by factors such as the successful candidate's skills, experience and working location, as well as the specific position's business line, scope and level.
