DIRECTOR OF HEALTH

Tthebatthie Denesųłiné Nation (formerly Smith’s Landing First Nation) is a Treaty 8 Nation located in Northern Alberta, near the Alberta-NWT border. Home to approximately 360 Dene members, we work with multiple levels of government while maintaining a deep connection to our lands, including Wood Buffalo National Park and the Slave River. Through our programs in Education, Housing, Lands, Wellness, and Health Programs and Services, we support the well-being and prosperity of our members.

The Thebatthie Denesųłiné Nation has an exciting opportunity for a passionate and experienced leader to join our team as Health Director. Reporting to the CEO, this role oversees the delivery and growth of community health programs—like public health, home care, family wellness, medical travel, midwifery, and early childhood services—while supporting the implementation of a 2–5 year health workplan. This is a meaningful leadership role for someone committed to advancing wellness, driving positive change, and supporting a strong and resilient Nation.

The successful candidate must be able to relocate to Fort Smith, Northwest Territories.

KEY RESPONSIBILITY AREAS:

- Administer, monitor, evaluate, facilitate, and implement the delivery of the Tthebatthie Denesųłiné Nation’s (TDN) community health department’s services and programs.
- Work towards the implementation of the 2-to-5-year workplan for TDN’s new Health Department.




- Prioritize and focus on creating key working relationships by networking and liaising with community health agencies/organizations, service providers, and the TDN community.
- Promote the integration of contemporary western health practices and traditional native beliefs and values to create a holistic balance of wellness.
- Promote the programs and services through public relations, presentations and public speaking at conferences, workshops for community members, outside private agencies, and government agencies.
- Manage the staff of the Health Department.
- Oversee the Health Department’s budget and authorize financial transactions within designated level of authority.

QUALIFICATIONS:

- Degree or diploma in Health Administration, Social Sciences, or a related Health & Wellness field.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in health administration and program delivery, preferably within a First Nation or Indigenous organization.
- Experience with health and wellness programs, including public health, family wellness, home care, medical travel, midwifery, and/or early childhood services.
- Robust knowledge of First Nations health, culture, communities, and Treaty rights.
- Demonstrated leadership and management skills, including staff supervision, budgeting, strategic planning, program/project oversight, and relationship building.
- Strong communication, decision-making, problem-solving, confidentiality, and computer skills
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence and required background checks.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $94,000.00-$135,000.00 per year
