Job Summary

The Transportation Shop Foreman is responsible for the day-to-day supervision and coordination of the heavy-duty repair shop. This position provides leadership and technical direction to Heavy-Duty Mechanics/technicians, Apprentices, Welders, Labourers, and other shop personnel while coordinating repair priorities to maximize fleet availability and minimize equipment downtime.

The Shop Foreman is responsible for ensuring trucks, trailers, and heavy equipment are maintained and repaired safely, efficiently, and in accordance with company standards, manufacturer specifications, and applicable safety and regulatory requirements. The position works closely with Dispatch, Drivers, Parts, Safety, and Management to coordinate repairs, prioritize equipment needs, maintain accurate work-order information, and ensure equipment is safe and ready for service

Responsibilities

- Supervise and coordinate the daily operations of the maintenance and repair shop.
- Provide direction and leadership to Heavy-Duty Mechanics, Apprentices, Labourers, and other shop personnel.
- Assign repair and maintenance work based on operational priorities, technician qualifications, workload, and parts availability.
- Establish daily repair priorities in coordination with the team, with a focus on safety, urgent breakdowns, and critical equipment.
- Monitor work orders, repair progress, equipment status, and expected completion times to minimize fleet downtime.
- Provide technical guidance and support with diagnostics, troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and complex mechanical, electrical, and heavy-duty repairs.
- Inspect completed repairs to ensure quality workmanship,



accurate repairs, and compliance with company, manufacturer, safety, and regulatory standards.
- Oversee CVIP inspections and ensure deficiencies are properly documented, repaired, inspected, and signed off before equipment is returned to service.
- Ensure all required maintenance, inspection, and repair records are completed accurately and maintained in accordance with company requirements.
- Enforce company safety policies, PPE requirements, lockout/tagout procedures, and applicable Occupational Health and Safety requirements.
- Maintain a clean, organized, secure, and professional shop environment and ensure shop tools, equipment, and machinery are properly maintained and used safely.
- Train, coach, mentor, and support mechanics and apprentices while monitoring employee performance, productivity, attendance, and development.
- Maintain and track apprentice Blue Book records, hours, training requirements, and development progress.
- Coordinate with Parts, Dispatch, Drivers, Safety, Management, vendors, towing companies, and outside repair facilities to support efficient fleet operations.
- Review and approve work orders, monitor parts and labour costs, identify recurring equipment issues, and implement measures to reduce repeat repairs, unnecessary expenses, and equipment downtime.

Qualifications

- Journeyperson Heavy-Duty Equipment Technician certification is preferred (Red Seal endorsement is considered an asset).
- Valid Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program (CVIP) certification is required.
- 3-5 years of supervisory, leadership and mentoring experience in a heavy-duty truck, trailer, fleet maintenance,



or equipment repair environment is preferred.
- Strong technical knowledge of heavy-duty trucks, trailers, diesel systems, electrical systems, air systems, braking systems, suspensions, hydraulics, and preventive maintenance.
- Demonstrated experience diagnosing and troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, and equipment-related issues.
- Strong understanding of commercial vehicle inspection, maintenance, and regulatory requirements.
- Proven ability to organize and prioritize multiple repair and maintenance requirements in a fast-paced transportation environment.
- Strong leadership, communication, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to provide clear direction, establish priorities, and hold employees accountable for safety, quality, productivity, and performance.
- Robust organizational skills with attention to detail and accurate maintenance documentation.
- Proficient with computers, electronic work-order systems, diagnostic software, fleet-management systems, and other maintenance-related technology.
- Experience managing apprentice records, Blue Book documentation, and apprentice hours is an asset.
- Class 1 Driver’s Licence is considered an asset but is not required.

Schedule:

- Cross-shift rotation, including weekend coverage, with every second weekend off for an extended long weekend.
- Day shift hours.
