We are hiring a Structural Steel & Piping Estimator / AutoCAD Drafter to price, draft, and coordinate our shop fabrication work. You will work across structural steel scopes — platforms, handrail, bracing, pipe supports, and skids — and ABSA-regulated pressure piping fabrication, so a working knowledge of both structural and pressure piping codes is essential.

What You Will Do

Estimating and Bidding

· Review specifications, drawings, ITPs, and contract documents, and prepare accurate cost estimates for structural steel and pressure piping projects.

· Interpret structural and mechanical drawings, isometrics, P&IDs;, and spool drawings to build complete material take-offs — beams, columns, connections, pipe, fittings, flanges, valves, and pipe supports.

· Price shop labour, consumables, coatings, NDE, and QC documentation as defined line items rather than lump-sum allowances.

· Use Excel, AutoCAD, and ProNest for take-offs, labour calculations, nesting, and pricing analysis.

· Prepare proposals, bids, and quotations with scopes, exclusions, and terms that clearly define the work and protect Field Max Industrial.

· Work with engineers, project managers, and clients to clarify scope and issue RFIs before bid close.

· Coordinate material procurement, MTR collection, and delivery schedules with finance and vendors.

Drafting and Detailing (AutoCAD)

· Produce shop fabrication drawings, weld maps, spool drawings, and cut lists in AutoCAD from engineered drawings and client-issued packages.

· Create and revise DXF/DWG files for CNC plasma and profile cutting, and prepare nests for shop release.

· Maintain drawing revision control and as-built mark-ups, and incorporate client and engineer comments through to approved-for-construction status.





· Build and maintain a library of standard details, templates, and blocks to cut drafting time on repeat scopes.

· Release drawing, cut, and nest packages to the shop, and set fabrication priorities with shop personnel.

· Communicate quality control and NDE requirements through the shop package so client, project, ABSA, and code requirements are met.

Project Administration and Documentation

· Maintain budget, cost, and schedule controls, and prepare progress reports in accordance with contract specifications.

· Monitor shop workflow and production schedules, and flag material or schedule risks early.

· Keep project managers, engineers, and clients updated on project progress.

· Maintain records of estimates, bids, change orders, and invoices, and support closeout activities including final cost analysis.

· Support quality turnover documentation — MTR logs, weld and NDE status logs, welder qualification logs, and shipping dossiers.

· Improve estimating and drafting processes through lessons learned and Key Performance Indicators, and stay current on material costs and industry practice.

What You Need

· 3–5+ years of experience estimating structural steel and/or piping fabrication, or in a similar shop fabrication or construction role.

· Demonstrated proficiency drafting in AutoCAD — shop drawings, weld maps, spool and support details, and DXF/DWG output for CNC cutting.

· Solid working knowledge of structural steel fabrication: material grades and shapes, connection design intent, weld symbols, and CSA W47.1 / W59 requirements.





· Hands-on experience with ABSA-regulated pressure piping fabrication in Alberta — ASME B31.3 (and/or B31.1), registered welding procedures (WPS/PQR), material traceability, and the quality documentation ABSA work requires.

· Ability to read and interpret structural steel and piping drawings, specifications, isometrics, P&IDs;, and spool drawings.

· Solid analytical skills and attention to detail in estimating costs, quantities, and pipe take-offs.

· Proficiency with estimating software and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).

· Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to prioritize workload and meet deadlines under pressure.

· Legally entitled to work in Canada.

Nice to Have

· Experience with AutoCAD and ProNest, or similar drafting and nesting software, for CNC plasma and profile cutting.

· Post-secondary training in mechanical or structural drafting, welding engineering technology, or a related discipline; C.E.T. designation or a journeyman ticket is an asset.

· Experience with 3D modelling or detailing software (Inventor, SolidWorks, Tekla, or similar).

· Familiarity with project management principles and scheduling software.
