Position Summary

The Assistant Controller provides person centered care to residents to promote the comfort, safety, and quality of life of the residents of Finlandia Nursing Home/Finlandia Village. Reporting to the CFO / Controller, the Assistant Controller is a key member of the Finance team and plays an important role in maintaining the financial integrity of the organization. The incumbent is responsible for supporting all aspects of financial accounting, reporting, budgeting, audit preparation, internal controls, and regulatory compliance across the organization's housing and long-term care operations.

This position serves as the second-in-command within the accounting function and provides support to various accounting and non-accounting areas. The Assistant Controller combines strategic financial responsibilities with hands-on operational accounting support and is expected to assist with accounts payable, payroll, and accounts receivable functions during peak periods, staff absences, or special projects.

Some Key Responsibilities

- Assist in the preparation of monthly and annual financial statements and management reports.
- Assist with month-end and year-end closing procedures, including journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and financial analyses.
- Prepare and review balance sheet reconciliations and investigate discrepancies.
- Monitor general ledger activity to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
- Assist in the preparation of annual operating and capital budgets.
- Support cash flow forecasting and financial planning activities.
- Assist in the preparation of reports and submissions required by government agencies, funding bodies, and regulatory authorities.
- Assist in maintaining effective internal controls and support the implementation of financial policies and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards,



legislation, and funding agreements.
- Support the development, documentation, and continuous improvement of accounting procedures and best practices.
- Assist with audit preparation and coordination with external auditors.
- Support accounts receivable and payroll positions as required.
- Assist in supporting accounts payable functions, including invoice processing, vendor payments, and expense administration, as required.
- Cross-train with finance team members to ensure operational continuity and adequate departmental coverage.
- Collaborate closely with the Accounting & Payroll Supervisor to support daily accounting operations as needed.
- Provide technical accounting guidance and support to finance team members.
- Participate in finance-related projects, including the implementation of a new payroll system in 2027/2028, and support continuous process improvement initiatives.
- Perform duties on behalf of the CFO / Controller, as delegated.
- Responsible for following all Occupational Health and Safety regulations and relevant organizational policies and procedures to ensure personal safety and safety of others.

Qualifications

- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a college diploma in a related field.
- Progress toward a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation is considered an asset but is not required. Candidates with strong technical accounting expertise and relevant practical experience will also be given full consideration.
- Finnish speaking skill is considered an asset
- An acceptable Police Vulnerable Sector Check verified within the past six months
- 2-step TB test within the past six months

Experience

- Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience.





Knowledge

- Strong understanding of accounting principles and financial reporting practices.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial management systems (i.e. Outstanding Plains & Dynamics 365 Business Central).
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrates attention to detail and accuracy is instrumental.
