Job Summary
HTPA CPA Firm is seeking an experienced Forensic Accountant to support financial investigations, dispute-related engagements, and litigation support services.
This position requires strong investigative judgment, advanced financial analysis skills, and the ability to translate complex financial evidence into clear, objective, and well-supported findings. The successful candidate will independently manage assigned work and collaborate with partners, legal counsel, clients, and other professional advisers.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct forensic accounting investigations involving suspected fraud, misappropriation of assets, financial irregularities, and disputed transactions.
- Examine accounting records, bank statements, general ledgers, contracts, tax documents, and other supporting records to identify inconsistencies and trace the movement of funds.
- Reconstruct incomplete financial records and prepare transaction analyses, financial reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
- Assess and quantify financial losses or damages arising from commercial disputes, shareholder matters, and other engagements within the firm’s practice.
- Prepare clear, accurate, and evidence-based reports, documenting methodologies, assumptions, limitations, findings, and conclusions.
- Maintain organized working papers and appropriate records of evidence sources, handling, and analytical procedures.
- Support legal counsel with financial document review, preparation of questions for examinations, and analysis of opposing financial reports.
- Participate in client meetings and investigative interviews, communicating technical findings clearly to non-accounting audiences.
- Identify weaknesses in financial controls and recommend practical measures to reduce fraud risk.
- Manage assigned engagements against agreed timelines, budgets, and quality standards, escalating material findings and scope changes promptly.
- Maintain professional objectivity, confidentiality, and appropriate conflict-of-interest safeguards throughout each engagement.
Qualifications
- An active Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation in good standing with the relevant Canadian provincial or territorial CPA body.
- A minimum of five years of directly relevant experience in forensic accounting, financial investigations, fraud examination, or litigation support. General bookkeeping or routine accounting experience alone will not satisfy this requirement.
- Demonstrated experience independently completing complex financial analyses and preparing professional reports supported by reliable evidence.
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting, internal controls, and investigative techniques.
- Proven ability to trace transactions, identify anomalies, assess competing explanations, and distinguish factual findings from assumptions and professional opinions.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and proficiency with accounting systems and financial data analysis tools.
- Strong English written and verbal communication skills,
including the ability to produce reports suitable for review by clients, legal counsel, and other professional advisers.
- Excellent attention to detail, sound professional judgment, and the ability to manage sensitive information with discretion.
- Consistent availability for the agreed part-time schedule, engagement deadlines, and necessary client or counsel meetings.
Preferred Qualifications
- An active Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) credential in good standing.
- Seven or more years of relevant experience, preferably within a public accounting firm, forensic accounting practice, or specialist investigations team.
- Experience supporting Canadian litigation, commercial disputes, shareholder disputes, or economic loss assessments.
- Experience preparing expert reports or supporting experts in mediation, arbitration, or court proceedings.
- Experience using data analytics or visualization tools to examine large financial datasets.
- Experience presenting and explaining financial findings under professional scrutiny.
