The Rotary Centre for the Arts (RCA) is Kelowna's premier arts and cultural facility, hosting a diverse range of performances, classes, exhibitions, community programs, meetings, and special events throughout the year.
We are seeking a dependable and customer-focused Building Attendant to join our Operations team. This position plays an important role in keeping the facility welcoming, organized, clean, safe, and ready to support artists, renters, performers, instructors, and visitors.
Position Overview
The Building Attendant supports the day-to-day operation of the Rotary Centre for the Arts during afternoon and evening hours. Responsibilities include event and room setups, customer service, facility monitoring, cleaning and facility upkeep, and ensuring the building is prepared for a wide variety of activities and events.
The balance of these responsibilities varies depending on the building schedule. Busy event periods may involve frequent room setups, turnovers, and assisting building users, while quieter periods provide an opportunity to focus more heavily on cleaning, organization, and general facility upkeep.
The ideal candidate is reliable, self-motivated, comfortable working independently, and willing to take initiative in identifying what needs to be done throughout their shift.
Key Responsibilities
Event & Room Support
- Set up and reset rooms for classes, meetings, rehearsals, performances, and special events
- Arrange tables, chairs, presentation equipment, and other rental assets according to event requirements
- Complete room inspections before and after bookings
- Assist with room turnovers and schedule-driven setup changes
- Ensure spaces are organized, presentable, and ready for use
Customer Service
- Welcome renters, instructors, performers, artists, and visitors
- Answer questions and provide general assistance throughout the facility
- Support a positive and professional experience for all building users
- Assist renters with basic facility needs and direct concerns to management when appropriate
Cleaning & Facility Upkeep
- Conduct regular building walkthroughs throughout the shift
- Clean and maintain public areas, washrooms, entrances, and common spaces
- Complete scheduled cleaning and facility upkeep tasks based on building needs
- Remove garbage and recycling as required
- Restock washroom and operational supplies
- Assist with room, equipment, and facility organization
- Complete end-of-shift facility resets and handovers
- Identify and report maintenance, safety, or operational concerns to management
- Safety & Security
- Monitor facility activity and ensure public areas remain safe and accessible
- Follow RCA policies, procedures, and safety practices
- Assist with opening and closing procedures as assigned
- Respond appropriately to operational issues and emergencies within the scope of the position
Qualifications
Preferred Experience
Experience in one or more of the following areas is an asset:
- Customer service
- Recreation, arts, or community facilities
- Event support or venue operations
- Hospitality or public-facing roles
- General facility or custodial work
Skills & Abilities
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Good organizational and time-management skills
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities and event schedules
- Strong attention to detail
- Dependable and punctual
- Comfortable working in a public-facing environment
- Willingness to take initiative and contribute wherever needed during a shift
Physical Requirements
- Ability to safely lift and move tables, chairs, and event equipment
- Ability to remain active throughout a shift, including regular walking, standing, bending, and lifting
- Comfortable performing cleaning and facility upkeep duties
- Comfortable working in a busy, multi-purpose facility
- Working Environment
The Rotary Centre for the Arts is a vibrant community facility where no two shifts are exactly alike. Building Attendants support performances, festivals, classes, community programs, rentals, meetings, and special events.
The nature of each shift depends on what is happening in the building. A busy event night may focus heavily on room setups, customer service, and quick turnovers between bookings. A quieter evening may involve considerably more cleaning, organization, facility checks, and preparation for upcoming activities.
Building Attendants are expected to remain engaged throughout their shift, identify tasks that need attention, and help ensure the facility is clean, organized, safe, and ready for its next use.
