Uprise Ascend is seeking an enthusiastic and community-minded Community Land Activation Intern to support projects that explore the sustainable, productive, and community-focused use of land and public spaces in Northern Ontario.

This role is well suited to a recent graduate or early-career professional interested in community development, urban or rural planning, environmental stewardship, economic development, public space activation, or technology. The successful candidate will gain hands-on experience in project coordination, community engagement, research, communications, and the application of digital tools to support land activation initiatives.

The intern will work closely with the Uprise team to research local opportunities, engage stakeholders, support project planning, and help identify ways that underutilized land assets can contribute to community and economic development.

Duties & Responsibilities

- Project Coordination: Support the planning, coordination, and implementation of land activation and community development projects.
- Community Engagement: Assist with workshops, consultations, stakeholder meetings, surveys, and other activities designed to gather community input.
- Research & Analysis: Research zoning bylaws, planning policies, environmental considerations, land-use opportunities, and best practices in sustainable land stewardship and place-making.
- Data & Technology: Learn and use Uprise's land activation software and digital tools to support research, analysis, project tracking, and land-use planning.
- Content & Communications: Develop presentations, reports, digital content, marketing materials, and community updates related to project activities.
- Project Administration: Maintain project documentation, timelines, research records, meeting notes, and stakeholder information.
- Community & Economic Development: Support the identification of opportunities for underutilized land to contribute to local community, environmental, and economic outcomes.

Requirements & Qualifications

- Education:



College diploma or university degree in Urban Planning, Geography, Environmental Studies, Community Development, Public Administration, Economic Development, or a related field is preferred.
- Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to engage professionally with community members and stakeholders.
- Organization: Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks, maintain project documentation, and meet deadlines.
- Digital Skills: Comfortable using Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, project management platforms, and AI-enabled tools; willingness to learn new technology.
- Research & Problem-Solving: Robust research, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
- Attributes: Self-motivated, collaborative, adaptable, and interested in contributing to community and economic development in Northern Ontario.

What the Intern Will Gain

The successful candidate will gain practical experience in community economic development, land-use research, stakeholder engagement, project coordination, and emerging technology applications. The role provides an opportunity to work directly on Northern Ontario projects while developing transferable skills applicable to planning, economic development, environmental, technology, and community-focused careers.

Due to funding criteria through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC), applicants must meet the following eligibility rules:

- Must be a university or college graduate who has graduated within the last three years from an accredited college or university.
- The candidate must be a resident of Ontario.
- The candidate must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
- The position must be the candidate’s first full-time employment in their field of study.

Pay: $18.00-$19.00 per hour

Expected hours: 35.0 – 40.0 per week
