Position Summary

SPCA Swift Current is seeking an experienced, compassionate and reliable individual to join our animal care team as an Animal Services Assistant II.

This hands-on role provides daily care for dogs and cats while taking on additional responsibilities in advanced animal handling, mentorship, customer service and frontline operational support.

Key Responsibilities

- Provide daily feeding, fresh water and routine care for shelter animals.
- Clean and disinfect kennels, condos, animal rooms, dishes and equipment.
- Complete laundry, dishes, waste disposal and other daily shelter duties.
- Provide exercise, enrichment, socialization and positive interaction.
- Monitor animals for changes in health, behaviour or well-being and report concerns.
- Safely handle and move dogs and cats, including animals requiring a higher level of handling experience.
- Assist with animal intakes, including kennel preparation, weighing and identification.
- Assist trained staff or veterinary professionals with animal restraint as required.
- Support adoption meet-and-greets and provide friendly, professional service to the public.
- Provide reception coverage, including answering phones, assisting visitors and processing approved payments and donations.
- Mentor and provide day-to-day guidance to less-experienced animal care staff.
- Serve as the senior frontline point of contact for routine operational needs when the Manager or Lead is not onsite, escalating concerns as required.
- Maintain clean, organized and appropriately stocked animal care areas.
- Follow and reinforce shelter safety, sanitation, infection-control and animal-handling procedures.
- Occasionally assist with adoption, community and fundraising events.
- Work collaboratively with staff and volunteers to support daily shelter operations.

Qualifications

Required

- Minimum one year of relevant animal care or animal-handling experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and demonstrated experience.




- Ability to safely and independently handle dogs and cats of varying sizes, temperaments and backgrounds.
- Ability to recognize animal behaviour and safety concerns and know when to escalate for assistance.
- Ability to mentor and provide practical guidance to less-experienced team members.
- Strong communication, teamwork and interpersonal skills.
- Previous customer service experience and confidence assisting visitors and responding to telephone inquiries.
- Ability to accurately process basic payments and donation transactions.
- Valid driver's licence.
- Reliable, organized and able to work independently within established policies and procedures.
- Ability to remain calm and use sound judgment in challenging situations.

Preferred:
- Previous shelter, humane society, veterinary clinic, boarding/kennel or similar skilled animal-care experience.
- Experience with animal intake, adoption, behaviour or shelter operations.
- Experience mentoring or training employees or volunteers.
- Animal handling, Fear Free, First Aid/CPR or other relevant training.

Physical & Working Requirements This is a physically active, hands-on shelter position. Applicants must be able to:

- Stand and walk for extended periods and regularly bend, kneel, crouch, push and pull.
- Safely lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Perform repetitive cleaning and animal care tasks.
- Work around animal hair, dander, waste, cleaning products, strong odours and varying noise levels.
- Work safely with animals whose health, behaviour or history may not always be fully known.
- Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Schedule & Availability Animal care is required 365 days a year. Applicants must be available for a combination of weekday, weekend and holiday shifts based on shelter needs. Casual, part-time and full-time opportunities may be available.
