Prior to founding the firm in 2004, Calvin Barry served for 16 years as a senior crown attorney, bringing deep prosecutorial insight to the practice. Role Description The Associate Lawyer will work full time on-site at the firm’s Toronto, ON office. This is an in-person role working long hours. You will manage a caseload of criminal and regulatory matters, including client consultations, case assessment, legal research, and preparation of pleadings, motions, and other court documents.

Lawyer will appear in court for bail hearings, trials, and appeals, negotiate with Crown counsel, and engage in plea discussions where appropriate.



You will collaborate with senior counsel and legal support staff to develop case strategies, review evidence, and ensure that files are diligently advanced. The role also includes maintaining clear client communication, managing deadlines, and upholding professional and ethical standards in all aspects of practice.

Qualifications

- Licensed to practice law in Ontario, in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario, with experience or strong interest in criminal and regulatory law.
- Demonstrated skills in legal research, legal writing, and drafting clear, persuasive court documents and correspondence.
- Strong advocacy abilities, including courtroom experience, oral argument, and effective negotiation with opposing counsel.
- Excellent analytical and judgment skills, with the ability to assess evidence, identify legal issues, and develop sound case strategies.
- Professional communication and client-service skills, including the ability to work with diverse clients and maintain confidentiality and ethical standards.
- Ability to manage multiple files, prioritize tasks, and work efficiently in a fast-paced, on-site environment.
- Cooperative mindset and willingness to learn from senior counsel, contribute to team discussions, and support firm objectives.
- Prior experience in criminal defense, Crown work, or related litigation is an asset; familiarity with Toronto-area courts and procedures is beneficial.
