About Us

Transition House Coalition of Northumberland operates an emergency shelter and is exploring expanding into transitional and permanent supportive housing programs across Northumberland County. We're also exploring other opportunities to support people experiencing homelessness in our community. With a growing team and a growing mandate, we're building the fundraising and communications infrastructure to match — and this newly created role is central to that.

About the Role

We're looking for a Development & Communications Manager to lead our fundraising program and manage the channels through which we reach our community — social media, our website, and newsletters. You'll help diversify our funding through grants and individual donors, and help more people understand and connect with our work through consistent, dignified storytelling.

Our Executive Director remains the organization's primary public voice and sets our key messages and advocacy priorities; you'll take those priorities and bring them to life across our channels, deciding how and to whom our story reaches. This is a hands-on, build-it-yourself role at a growing organization — a great fit for someone who wants ownership over a fundraising and communications program from the ground up.

This position begins as a one-year, full-time contract, with the goal of the role becoming ongoing as the fundraising program you build starts to sustain itself.

What You'll Do

Fund Development

- Research and pursue new grant opportunities (foundation, provincial, and federal), including funding relevant to housing programs
- Write and submit grant proposals, letters of inquiry, and renewals; manage a grants calendar
- Manage grant reporting and compliance, working with our finance team as needed
- Steward relationships with existing institutional funders




- Manage and grow our individual donor program using our existing Canada Helps database
- Plan and run an annual fundraising calendar, including appeals and a year-end campaign
- Cultivate and steward donor relationships, including major donor prospects

Communications

- Develop and run a social media strategy and content calendar
- Create photo, video, and written content that represents the people we support with dignity, accuracy, and informed consent
- Maintain our website and produce regular donor and community newsletters
- Translate the Executive Director's key messages and advocacy priorities into content across our channels
- Track channel performance (reach, engagement, subscriber growth) to keep improving our approach

What We're Looking For

- 3+ years of nonprofit development and/or communications experience, including grant writing
- A track record of securing grants and/or growing an organization's audience or public reach
- Robust writing skills, and comfort presenting results to funders and board members
- Experience telling stories about vulnerable or marginalized populations with dignity, care, and informed consent
- Comfort with donor database/CRM tools (Canada Helps experience a plus) and social media management tools
- Excitement about building programs and systems from the ground up, not just running existing ones
- Familiarity with homelessness services, housing, or the Northumberland County community is an asset
