Volunteer Position: GET Set Math Volunteer Instructor

Schedule / Time Commitment: To be confirmed based on program needs and volunteer availability (Mon-Thurs 10 hours a week)

Position Overview The Learning Place is seeking a knowledgeable and patient Math Volunteer Instructor to support adults participating in the GET Set program. The volunteer will work with learners helping them strengthen practical numeracy and mathematics skills for learning, employment and everyday life.

Key Responsibilities

- Provide math and numeracy support to adult learners.
- Support practical math concepts, including number skills, operations, fractions, decimals, percentages, measurement, money and budgeting.
- Adapt instruction and level of support to meet the diverse needs of learners, recognizing that some learners are highly independent while others may require additional guidance, encouragement and step-by-step support.
- Help learners develop problem-solving, reasoning and independent learning skills.
- Connect math instruction to practical situations used at work, at home and in the community.
- Provide one-to-one and small-group learning support as assigned.
- Explain concepts using clear, step-by-step instruction and a variety of approaches to accommodate different learning styles and levels of understanding.
- Prepare or assist with worksheets, exercises and practical learning activities.
- Encourage learner confidence, participation, independence and a positive attitude toward learning math.
- Communicate learner progress,



concerns and observations to program staff.

Required Qualifications
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Patient, respectful, dependable and encouraging approach.
- Ability to work with adult learners with different learning needs and abilities.
- Ability to follow program direction and work collaboratively with staff.
- Commitment to confidentiality, professional boundaries and The Learning Place policies.
- Must be able to support learners with different levels of math and numeracy skills.
- Strong foundational mathematics and numeracy skills.

Experience & Preferred Skills
- Experience in mathematics, numeracy, education, tutoring, STEM or a related field is an asset.
- Experience teaching or tutoring adult learners is preferred.
- Ability to explain mathematical concepts in transparent, practical steps.
- Experience developing or adapting learning activities is an asset.
- Basic ability to use calculators, computers and digital learning tools.

Training & Support Volunteers will receive orientation and ongoing guidance from The Learning Place staff. Training may include program procedures, adult learning support, inclusive communication, professional boundaries, confidentiality and privacy, health and safety, and role-specific procedures.

Impact of the Role

This volunteer helps GET Set learners build practical Math Skills and confidence that can support continued education, employment, money management and everyday decision-making.
