Volunteer Position: GET Set English & Literacy Volunteer Instructor

Schedule / Time Commitment: To be confirmed based on program needs and volunteer availability (Mon-Thurs 10 hours a week)

Position Overview The Learning Place is seeking a knowledgeable and dependable English & Literacy Volunteer Instructor to support adults participating in the GET Set program. The volunteer will work with learners at Canadian Language Benchmark level 6, helping them strengthen practical English, reading, writing and communication skills for learning, employment and everyday life.

Key Responsibilities

- Provide English and literacy support to adult learners at Literacy Level 6 and higher.
- Support reading comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, grammar, sentence structure and writing.
- Help learners strengthen practical writing skills such as emails, forms, workplace communication and everyday written information.
- Provide one-to-one and small-group learning support as assigned.
- Adapt support and instruction to accommodate learners with different levels of understanding, learning needs and independence, providing additional guidance and encouragement when needed.
- Explain concepts clearly and use different approaches to support learner understanding.
- Prepare or assist with worksheets, exercises and learning activities.
- Encourage confidence, participation, independence and continued learning.
- Communicate learner progress, concerns and observations to program staff.
- Maintain a respectful,



inclusive and adult-appropriate learning environment.

Required Qualifications
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Patient, respectful, dependable and encouraging approach.
- Ability to work with adult learners with different learning needs and abilities.
- Ability to follow program direction and work collaboratively with staff.
- Commitment to confidentiality, professional boundaries and The Learning Place policies.
- Must be comfortable supporting learners with English and literacy skills at different levels of understanding.
- Solid written and verbal English skills.

Experience & Preferred Skills
- Experience in English, literacy, education, tutoring, adult education or a related field is an asset.
- Experience teaching or tutoring adult learners is preferred.
- Ability to break down reading and writing concepts into clear, manageable steps.
- Experience developing or adapting learning materials is an asset.
- Basic computer and digital literacy skills.

Training & Support Volunteers will receive orientation and ongoing guidance from The Learning Place staff. Training may include program procedures, adult learning support, inclusive communication, professional boundaries, confidentiality and privacy, health and safety, and role-specific procedures.

Impact of the Role

This volunteer helps GET Set learners strengthen the English and literacy skills needed to participate more confidently in education, employment and everyday life.
