This position is 1.0 PY (full-time position).

Nunavut schools are currently focused on improving literacy outcomes for all students and ensuring students’ learning experiences are culturally relevant and respectful.

Located in the picturesque hamlet of Gjoa Haven,Quqshuun Ilihakvik serves the community of Gjoa Haven. The school has a population of approximately 239 students in a K-6 setting with a staff of 34. The school and community are steeped in a rich history of Inuit culture.

Required qualifications

Eligible for Interim Language/Cultural Specialist Certificate

Fluent in both English and Inuktut (written and oral)

In the event that this competition becomes an open until filled posting, this position may be offered as a one year term under Letter of Authority.

Desired qualifications

Experience working in K - 12 classroom settings

Evidence of courses taken towards educational certification

Experience and / or training with current assessment methods

Evidence of differentiated instruction and inclusive practices

Experience and / or training in classroom management practices and the development of positive learning environments (eg. Restitution, Tribes, Positive Effective Behavior Supports, etc.)

Cross-cultural and/or northern teaching experience

Evidence of training and / or experience in the area of Balanced Literacy





Training and / or teaching experience in an ESL setting

Evidence / experience building positive relationships with students, colleagues, parents, stakeholders

Small Engine Repair would be an asset

Please note: Subsidized housing is not available.

The salary for an Aboriginal Language Certificate holder ranges from $78,206 prorated/annum to $94,389 prorated/annum. Language allowance, dependant on testing qualifications of $2,500 to $10,000 prorated/annum. .

The Northern Allowance for Gjoa Haven is $26,345 prorated/annum.

Current Government of Nunavut employees must hold a valid Nunavut teaching certificate and must submit a current Criminal Record Check (CRC) and Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) before appointment to the position can be finalized.
