Position Summary The Lead Mechatronics Engineer is responsible for the design, development, programming, review and certification of electrical and control systems for custom industrial equipment. As a licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.), the position provides engineering oversight for electrical designs, PLC programming and control system architecture while ensuring compliance with applicable codes, standards and customer requirements.
The Lead Mechatronics
Engineer supports project execution from concept through design, manufacturing, Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), commissioning and continuous improvement, while providing technical leadership, mentorship and guidance to engineers, designers and technologists. This position will establish and lead NMT’s controls engineering discipline and provide the technical foundation for the continued growth of the Company’s electrical and automation capabilities.

Responsibilities
- Design, develop and review electrical control systems for custom industrial equipment.
- Prepare, review and approve electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts and other engineering documentation.
- Review, approve and apply their P.Eng. seal to engineering drawings, electrical schematics, calculations, control system designs and related engineering documents, where appropriate and in accordance with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) requirements and Company procedures.
- Select and approve electrical, automation and control system components based on project requirements, applicable standards and customer specifications.
- Develop, modify, review and validate PLC programs for industrial automation systems.
- Develop, review and approve PLC programming, HMI applications and other control system software prior to release.
- Program and troubleshoot industrial PLC and automation platforms, including Siemens, Rockwell/Allen-Bradley, IQAN and other applicable platforms.
- Develop HMI interfaces and support motion control, VFD, servo and industrial communication systems as required.
- Design safe, reliable and cost-effective control systems that meet applicable engineering, safety and customer requirements.
- Develop comprehensive Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) procedures and lead or participate in FAT activities.
- Support Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), equipment installation, commissioning, startup and troubleshooting activities as required.
- Verify control systems perform in accordance with customer specifications, engineering requirements and applicable codes and standards.
- Review engineering documentation for technical accuracy, completeness and compliance.
- Ensure applicable projects comply with CSA, Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), UL, NFPA, IEC, machinery safety standards and customer-specific requirements.
- Participate in engineering design reviews, safety risk assessments and other technical reviews.
- Provide technical support throughout manufacturing, installation, commissioning, customer startup and warranty investigations.
- Require engineering changes or design revisions where safety, regulatory compliance, quality or performance concerns are identified.
- Stop or withhold the release of engineering documentation, software or equipment when it does not meet applicable codes, standards, customer specifications or Company quality requirements.
- Provide technical direction and guidance to engineers, designers, technologists and other project team members regarding electrical and controls engineering matters.
- Mentor junior engineers, designers and technologists and support the development of the controls engineering team.
- Assist in developing engineering standards, templates, procedures and best practices.
- Identify opportunities to improve designs, automation systems and engineering processes and support standardization initiatives.
- Stay current with emerging automation technologies, applicable codes, standards and industry best practices.
- Liaise with customers, suppliers, contractors and regulatory authorities on technical matters related to electrical and controls engineering.
- Escalate technical, safety, quality or compliance concerns to the Engineering Manager or senior management when necessary.
- Perform all duties in accordance with NMT health and safety policies, procedures, safe work practices and applicable legislative requirements.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechatronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in good standing with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO), with the ability and willingness to assume professional responsibility by reviewing, approving and sealing applicable engineering documents.
- Minimum 5 years of relevant industrial controls and automation engineering experience.
- Strong experience with PLC programming, industrial automation systems and electrical control system design.
- Ability to read, interpret, review and certify electrical schematics, wiring diagrams and engineering documentation.
- Experience with HMI development and industrial communication networks.
- Experience with Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs).
- Experience with motion control systems and servo systems is considered an asset.
- Knowledge of CSA Standards, Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), NFPA, UL and IEC Standards.
- Knowledge of machinery safety standards and requirements.
- Experience with Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT).
- Strong engineering judgement, problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Solid project planning and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
- Ability to mentor and develop technical staff and provide effective technical leadership.
- High attention to detail and a strong commitment to quality, safety and continuous improvement.
Physical requirements
- Ability to safely access manufacturing, testing and commissioning environments.
- Ability to work around industrial equipment, machinery, electrical systems and active manufacturing operations while following established safety procedures.
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) when working in manufacturing and testing areas.
- Ability to safely perform occasional hands-on troubleshooting, inspection and commissioning activities as required.
Working Conditions
- Office and industrial manufacturing environment.
- Regular interaction with engineering, manufacturing, testing and commissioning activities.
- Periodic exposure to production areas, industrial equipment, electrical systems, machinery, noise and other conditions typical of a manufacturing facility.
- May be required to access manufacturing and testing environments while following established safety procedures and wearing required PPE.
- Occasional travel to customer sites may be required to support installation, commissioning, Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), troubleshooting and other project requirements.
- May be required to support customer startups, warranty investigations and other field activities as required.
Pay: $48.00-$55.00 per hour
