Position Details

Department of Government Services - Government of Newfoundland and Labrador

Reporting to the Manager of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Inspections (Western Region), the OHS Officer IIA is responsible for performing inspections and promoting awareness of health and safety issues in workplaces in Newfoundland and Labrador. Specifically, this position is responsible for interpreting, implementing, and enforcing the OHS Act and Regulations and other applicable provincial health and safety related legislation; completing inspections of workplaces to assess workplace health and safety conditions; investigating complaints received from workplaces and the public; investigating work refusals; investigating workplace accidents and fatalities; preparing reports and issuing directives/stop work orders to identify preventive measures and courses of action concerning health and safety violations; making recommendations regarding the prosecution of individuals and organizations who contravene the legislation; responding to inquiries from a variety of stakeholders on OHS matters; maintaining effective working relationships with individuals and organizations; and performing other duties as required.

Screening Criteria

1. Completion of a diploma program in Occupational Health and Safety, Health and Safety Management,



or Safety Engineering Technology (equivalencies will be considered)
2. Experience performing occupational health and safety inspections
3. Experience performing occupational health and safety investigations
4. Experience working with multiple stakeholder groups
5. Completion of relevant safety designation (CRSP, NCSO, CRST, etc.)(asset)

2. Acknowledges requirement for performing work requiring physical activity (moderate to intense)
3. Acknowledges requirement for use of a private vehicle (with business insurance)
4. Acknowledges requirement for exposure to graphic and sensitive scenes and content
